At some point in life, all of us are going to experience something that impacts the way we show up at work. Talking about it might feel scary, but you may never know the ripple of change you could cause by sharing.
As a financial advisor and Enneagram 8, Kristin isn’t usually the type to overshare at work. She’s great at her job and has been (and continues to be) successful in her career. When she found herself having to cancel meetings and move calls for doctor appointments, she realized it was time to share about what her family was going through.
By opening the door for the conversation about infertility, she realized not only was her team and clients receptive and kind so many of them shared that they wished they could have been more open when they were going through similar situations.
Brave Kristin has been sharing and leading by her values by continuing to have this conversation, using her Enneagram 8 confidence and opening doors for others that may never have opened them alone.
Here’s what we talked about:
03:51 Why Kristin is in finance
07:48 The cost of not leading by value
11:09 Infertility and work
18:10 How to share something vulnerable at work with clients
Are you really leading? You’re crossing off todo’s. You’re pushing projects through. You’re even checking in on teammates. But are you leading?
Leadership starts with values. Getting clear on your values is essential to leading effectively but who has time for that? It seemed like something others get to do but definitely not me, definitely not in my job, I’m too busy!
Once I started to realize how my personality influenced my leadership, I realized that values were going to be my north star. As I started to dive deeper, I realized that values are exactly where leadership starts, it’s how we align ourselves and our team with the organization to accomplish more.
If you have “figure out values” on your todo list, or maybe you even have a list on the wall, but you’re not sure your actions and leadership are aligned with them, I’m inviting you to watch this episode and start exploring the idea of values and leadership.
How is this going to affect the way you lead yourself, your family, and your team? Because it will influence all three whether we’re paying attention to it or not.

Wit, wisdom, and an intense Alabama accent stopped me in the middle of my kitchen. Do you ever hear someone speak and think, “I have to know you more”?
Someone else (so unmemorable I couldn’t even tell you who they were) was rambling on in a Clubhouse room when this delightfully direct drawl smoothly interrupted as the moderator, summarized the nugget of wisdom, and made me laugh. Each of those is an important skill for a leader, but all three together is a master. And Mary R. Synder is truly a master communicator.
Long before the heyday of Clubhouse at the end of 2020, Mary has been helping organizations and speakers grow their revenue, increase supporter engagement, and expand their influence. She uses expert storytelling that pierces through the complex communication landscape that is our current reality.
Mary joins us as our Monday Mentor this week to help you as a leader use stories not to guilt people, but to inspire action in your people that leads to change.
Great leadership starts with a great mindset. It’s something I’ve come to learn, and you might be surprised to hear, it’s not always something I’ve believed.
I used to think working a little bit harder, putting your head down and your emotions to the side was the way to go. But after running into the same walls every couple of years, I realized it does start with the mindset and first and foremost: knowing yourself.
That’s how you level up, that’s how you get promoted. That’s how you find joy in work.
At the Joyosity Retreat, you will define and refine your leadership mindset in community with others and me as a guide so you are revived for not just your leadership, but your life.
Fred has worked with leaders across all industries and levels. He shared where he would recommend starting as a leader and reminded me of a great model Dr. Seligman coined in psychology, the PERMA model of well being.
Having a community around you of positive influences is key, and if you’re one of the MANY leaders who aren’t feeling that right now, know that you’re not alone. Knowing yourself, being transparent with your team, and creating a community will get you there. One step at a time.

The thought, “Does this work even matter,” has crossed all of our minds at some point. Have you ever found yourself scrolling and thinking, “oh my gosh, I have to do more!” thinking that the work you’re involved in isn’t quite important enough, isn’t doing enough, or changing enough in our world in some way? It’s an easy rabbit hole to fall down, which is why this conversation with Jordan was so impactful.
Jordan shared how, at one point, he considered opening up a church. As a tech entrepreneur, this was quite a career leap. It took a good friend lovingly (but also pretty directly!) telling him that might not be the right path before he realized that he could bring his faith into his current work. That his current work was a space where he could influence change.
We talked about how the hard work really starts with knowing yourself and your values. How finding out what you’re really good at and what your purpose in life is requires a community, you can’t answer that question alone! Jordan shared an example of a friend who is a hairdresser and how the work they are doing is SO meaningful in the community and how yours is too.
Figuring out what you value and living and working from them is the key to joy at work.
Here’s what we talked about:
05:08 How Jordan Brought Faith Into His Work
08:51 Creating Peace And Joy At Work
12:25 Starting With Who Are You
16:26 Finding Your Purpose
19:34 The Value In Your Work (Whatever That Is!)
One woman can change the world. No really, ask Ronne. She and I both believe wholeheartedly in this statement.
During our conversation, we dove into what changing the world actually means… and how it’s not that we should be doing everything.
Especially as women leaders, we often find ourselves thinking, “Oh, I’ll just do that real quick,” and we push our real gifts and talents to the bottom of the to-do list because we know it’s easy for us to tackle those.
The thing is, those “easy” tasks that we’re really good at? That’s our sweet spot, that’s the magic.
So how do we create a career and a life where we get to live and work in our magic zone?
Ronne and I touched on how often success can scare us more than failure and the power behind the stories we’re telling. Finding where you shine means getting clear on what you value, what others see in you, and how to craft stories that are both true and empowering.
Here’s what we talked about:
10:05 Just because you can doesn’t mean you should
12:38 How to find where you shine
15:41 Tackling the fear of success
17:07 What you need to get clarity
21:28 The power of women’s stories
A horrible knot forms in your stomach. Your ears fill with that whooshing sound. You start to wonder, “Is that true?!” From overhearing something to unhelpful feedback or even just mean words…those stories stick with us. And it will impact the way you show up in the world and will overflow into your team, your career, and your business. So what do you do next?
Lauren, Principal Storyteller of Forever Ready Productions and recovering journalist, joined us to share how our stories and beliefs are impacting our leadership. We both shared stories of times we’ve allowed someone else’s story to shape and influence our lives far beyond that one incident.
Lauren jumped in with the ways she took an old unhelpful story and transformed it to change her her results. She identified her values. Are you leading and living from a place that honors your values? (If you have never done this work or need to revisit, we’re diving into it at my retreat in February!)
She really looked at her stories. Is there something you’re letting live rent-free in your head that’s not true? Do you know how to identify the story? And more importantly, change the story to change your results?
Here’s what we talked about:
06:30 Using story to talk about yourself
10:05 When Lauren overheard a story that changed her
12:46 What a bad story in our head costs us
14:38 Digging into leadership stories
Growth can be scary as a business owner. Culture shifts with growth; there's no way around it.
The more members of the team you bring on, the more that shift is going to happen. So how do we lean in? How do you shift and grow in a way that works for you and your business?
After seeing insane growth at Clutch, Kiersten called me in to talk to her team about the Enneagram and the way that our personalities play into work.
Watching her team experience aha moments and say things like, “Oh that’s why you said this during that conversation!” was powerful for all of us in the room.
Understanding your personality and those on your team is the way of healthy growth. And using them as tools vs. weapons creates belonging, retention, and increased productivity.
The first and hardest step usually comes with discovering your own personality. How faults and strengths play into your leadership and deciphering what your values are so you have a strong north star.
If you know that you need to do better at leading yourself, the Joyosity Retreat is coming up in February 2024 to help you with just that. Early bird pricing of $500 off ends Dec. 31, 2023.
Want a customized Joyosity workshop on the Enneagram for your team? Let’s talk.
Here’s what we talked about:
04:12 Accidental leadership
08:48 Leading through growth
11:13 Using the enneagram on a team
18:10 The ROI of belonging
A 2-hour commute each way, a never-ending to-do list, and the stress piling on both at work and at home. Sound familiar? Corrie found herself in a chronic state of overwhelm. Like so many of us, she avoided the inevitable: change. One way or another, things had to change.
She just knew it couldn’t be this, and it could be so much more.
Corrie made a few bold choices, and through her work developed a framework that shows the culprits of overwhelm. On the show, she gave an overview of the 5 Cs of overwhelm: Clarity, Confidence, Community, Conditioning, and Consistency. If you’re curious what your culprit is she has a quiz on her website to help you identify it.
We also talked about The Joyosity Retreat as an opportunity to address the clarity, confidence, and consistency Cs of the model. Find out more of the details of this leadership retreat in February 2024. Early Bird pricing is available until Dec. 31, 2023.
Corrie’s story inspired us, and the way she’s using it to help us all even more so. If you’re in that “running and avoiding” space, I highly recommend taking a peek at the conversation. You’re meant for more, my friend. Join us in moving forward to a space of flourishing!
Here’s what we talked about:
05:12 Where things started
09:20 Defining overwhelm and burnout
11:08 The overwhelm culprits
18:16 What it could be
18:54 The opportunities ahead
I remember VIVIDLY the first time a leader yelled at me at work. I know now that what I was feeling in that moment was shock but back then I had no clue how to address the situation. I knew how to handle conflict with my students but never with someone who was supposed to be in control and in charge.
From that conflict and others like it I’ve learned that avoiding hard conversations still causes disconnection. Whether it’s at the company Christmas party or the Thanksgiving table with family when conflict arises the best thing to do is acknowledge it head on but in a warm way.
Here are four questions to help take that burning forest fire and turn it into something warm. Something like a small fire to cook vs an inferno that burns everything it touches.
Behind every conflict you will find a need for safety, love or belonging but it usually manifests itself in big and sometimes scary ways.
Using these four questions in a tactful way next time you find yourself in a confrontation is going to help you and your relationships, I promise. I’ve tried it. I’ve helped others with it.
Here’s what we talked about:
05:00 My first conflict at work
08:40 Question 1 - finding love
10:00 Question 2 - identifying loss
12:05 Question 3 - addressing hurt
14:30 Question 4 - dreaming
18:54 The opportunities ahead
