Today Mark Rothery is preaching about the way in which life can be compartmentalised and how God needs to be the Lord over every area of life.

He reminds us that on the cross Jesus, who knew no sin became man and took our sin on himself becoming our substitute so that we could be righteous before God. Andrew Stephens reminds us that Jesus coming as a King was predicted throughout the writings of the Old Testament. As we see the predictions of our coming king, let us see that Jesus is everything we could ever want or need, that he truly is all he was predicted to be. Part 1 of a 4 part series called "What a King."

Jonah responds to God’s saving of the Ninevites by getting angry at God to saving them. Jonah has learnt about God’s compassion, but he is yet to truly understand it. God uses a plant and a word to remind Jonah of who He is and how His plans are better than Jonah’s. The fourth chapter of this story teaches us how God is sharing His heart with us, so we can understand His purposes and live in His image demonstrating who God is to those around us.

Jonah is finally obedient to God’s call and goes to Nineveh. As a result, the people repented and are saved from God’s punishment. In this chapter we find a God who is so gracious that even when we fail to respond to His call to use us in His mission, he gives us another chance and will use us when we say yes.

From the belly of the fish, Jonah recognises that God is saving him from his situation and God is his protector. Jonah recognises that anything that people are reliant on other than God is a ‘vain idol’ which will fail them. In this Jonah is repenting of his actions and confessing that God is the sovereign source of salvation.

The second chapter of this story shows us that idols will never satisfy us and only by keeping Jesus in his rightful place will we experience life.

God calls Jonah to the people of Ninevah. This is not an easy task that God calls Jonah to and he responds by running away. God shows He is sovereign over even the wind and waves as he causes a storm to stop Jonah from escaping but then shows His remarkable grace by providing a fish to save him.

The first chapter of the story shows how even when we disobey, God is gracious and will use His grace to bring us back into His perfect will.
