    Bible Project Podcast Episodes 149-153
Bible Project Story: God and Money
The Bible Project's Video on Generosity

“MOST of the ugliness in the human narrative comes from a distorted quest to possess beauty. COVETING begins with appreciating blessings: MURDER begins with a hunger for justice. LUST begins with a recognition of beauty. GLUTTONY begins when our enjoyment of the delectable gifts of GOD starts to consume us. IDOLATRY begins when our seeing a reflection of God in something beautiful leads to our thinking that the beautiful image bearer is worthy of WORSHIP.”
― Shane Claiborne, Jesus for President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals

  • E31 "Holidays, Holy Days, and Hollow Days Pt.2"

In this episode Daniel and Nate talk further about forming rich culture that's rooted in the story scripture and the side effects of hollow cultures and not taking the time to build sacred places in time. What are practices that draw our attention away from our busyness and the smallness our lives and lift our eyes toward God and His Son? How can we build cathedrals and temples in time that bring  attention  to the divine?

God's Appointed Times by Barney Kasdan

Here's a podcast the Bible Podcast did on "Sabbath Rest and Cathedrals In Time" and here is the entire series on "Sabbath and Rest".  This whole series has been really impactful on Daniel and Nate and would bring a lot of context to this podcast conversation.

  • E30 "Gardens, Debt Freedom, & Becoming Priests"

This week Daniel and Nate take some time to talk Life Updates and Church Family Updates.

Madison Church Garden is starting back up by students starting 1,800 seeds indoors. Big thanks Healing hands International for donating so many great seeds to get the garden going strong this year!

Nate and Rachel paid off their last debt this month and can't wait to help others do the same. They started working on these 7 simple baby steps to financial freedom several years ago and even though Nate had cancer and alot of other health problems since they started the journey, they have finally made it to the last step!

We are happy to announce that a JFS Listener has given a significant amount of money to stock the seed fund in order to start a Debt Annihilation Team at Madison! We are so thankful for this generous gift and we can't wait to see more and more people find financial freedom! We're doing it! We are DECLARING JUBILEE!! We can't wait to keep you updated on this effort as we start the DAT and get things moving!

Church life is starting to restart and bloom again now that many have been vaccinated and can gather again.

Daniel's ministry team takes on a new team member to work the kingdom fields.

Daniel and Nate ponder why people feel disconnected and leave church families and what forces and cultures play into that.

Daniel and Nate talk about budgeting our time and our resources to pursue freedom and flexibility to serve and help others.

We've been listening to the Bible Project series on Priests and we encourage you to do that same! There are some great reflections there!

  • E28 "How to Celebrate New Years"

In this episode, we hear a sermon from Daniel about the concept of the "Image of God.” We’ve talked about this on the podcast before, but in this sermon, Daniel circles back to the source of that idea and what that means for how we treat others. Additionally, Daniel calls his community to repurpose the New Years holiday because as it is, this holiday is pretty vague and empty. Like Nate and Daniel discussed last week, we seem to have a lot of those days and maybe we need to become a people who creates “cathedrals in time” as Dr. Tim Mackie puts it. Daniel speaks to that a bit in this sermon. Enjoy!

  • E27 "Americans Are Like Hotdogs"

In this Episode Daniel and Nate talk about a question asked on a recent Bible Project Q+R Podcast about Israel and the Church.
Here's a link to the whole "Family of God" series from the Bible Project Podcast.
Here's a link to the specific episode we took our inspiration from for this conversation: E235 "Why Do Cain's Descendants Show Up After the Flood? Q+R"

What is Replacement Theology or Supersessionism? What is the difference between Replacement Theology and Covenant Theology?

Vintage21 video: "You had your chance... you blew it" Is that how God thinks of Israel and it is Christian's turn now to represent God? Or Christians have misrepresented God and it is Islam's turn.

Do you think it's important to realize and remember that Jesus and the early church movement was Jewish? How does forgetting that Jesus was Jewish set us up for misunderstanding the narrative of scripture? Have you ever spent time with devout jews, messianic jews, or christian traditions that are very aware of their jewish roots ? What do you think christians can learn from Jewish practices and holidays?  Do you think christians carrying forward the celebration of holidays like Passover and the Festival of Tents would be helpful to understand Jesus and the story of scripture? What do you think the balance is between not knowing your story, knowing your story, and obsessing about having a family name and proving your ownership of it.

How far do you think we should go in weaving everything about our lives into the story of scripture? Is it ok for our holidays, days of the week, month names, etc to be rootless or echoing another story that has different answers to "Why are we here? Where are we going? Why is there so much wrong with the world? and What's the remedy?"

Where will those other stories lead us? What will the rootlessness do to us?

  • E26 "When Elon Musk Comes To Church"

In this episode Daniel and Nate talk about recent technology breakthroughs, how those things will impact our culture, and how the church will respond to those changes.

Like what will be the implications gene editing becoming more and more affordable.   Here's a link to an article about a major leap forward with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome and gene editing. How far can we take gene editing and how could it be used to heal and change our bodies?  Will the church take a zero tolerance stance on gene editing because it is playing God or will we have a more nuanced response about the time and place to use this technology?

After Tesla, Elon Musk, and others roll out full self-driving cars, will we need church parking lots anymore? Will we want to own cars anymore and deal with the maintenance and headaches? What will churches do with their unused parking lots? Will they turn them into gardens that are managed by Humanoid Autonomous Robots that garden, manage animals, harvest produce, eggs, milk, etc and can cook, process, store, and distribute these resources to the community?

Nate and Daniel also discuss the implications of the Boston Dynamics dancing robots. It's not CGI. The video is totally real. Personal robots are coming to every home and business in this decade. Robots that can learn and work and help us and also put us out of the work we're doing today.  Is a machine that can do the job of 100 humans a good thing? Is our goal to replace humans in all systems possible and what would humans go on to do if those things are automated?

    Why are we here?
    Where are we going?
Why is so much wrong with the world?
    What's the remedy?

Here's a link to the book "When Helping Hurts" as you think about how you can really help those who are in need in ways that accomplish the intended goals.

  • E24 "How Do I Make Money Do Good? Part 2"

In this episode Daniel and Nate have an awesome conversation with Garrett Dickerson about Thrivent Financial, how the church handles money,  and what the church could accomplish if we all stewarded our money and resources wisely and shared it generously.

Garrett and his wife, Kristin, live in Clarksville, TN with their three boys, Anders, Garron, and William. They worship together at the Hilldale Church of Christ, where Garrett serves as a Deacon for the congregation.
