After Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers, Judah departed from the family clan and dwelled in Adullam and married a Canaanite woman. They had three sons, who clearly seemed to have adopted the ways of their pagan mother; and two of them are killed by God. Judah tried to save the last son, refused to give him in marriage to his daughter-in-law Tamar, because he feared this was the cause of the deaths of his two eldest sons. Tamar deceived Judah and elicited him into an immoral act (prostitution) in order to obtain legitimate children by him. Judah discovered that she was pregnant and judged that she should be executed. But, before being put to death, Tamar produced evidence that she was indeed pregnant by Judah himself.
