Today I will talk about Stress – How does it work, is it good for you?
Stress is a useful reaction over the course of our evolution, we have used stress to encounter difficult situation.
Hunter gatherers used stress wisely. They were relaxed most of the time, felt stress only in specific situation, the threats were real that it could end their life, so basically stress kept their body healthy.
In contrary, we work most of the time and are alert to all the threats, we are online most of the time waiting for a message or a notification, our brains associates the ping of the cell phones notification with the threat of a predator, so stress causes depression, insomnia, anxiety and high blood pressure in Modern humans.
We need to turn off the auto pilot of our brain. Mostly we are physically present and mentally absent. We need to stop sitting and start walking, as per WHO, one should walk at least 8000 steps a day, which is around 2-3 Kilometers per day. If you medicate at least 10 min every in the morning, it does wonders to your mental health.
A little stress is good for you. Low levels of stress have been beneficial for both mental and physical health. Dr. Howard S.Friedman, a psychology professor at the University of California, discovered that people who maintained low levels of stress, who faced challenges and put their heart and soul into their work in order to succeed, lived longer than those who chose a more relaxed lifestyle. He concluded that a small dose of stress tend to develop healthier habits.
I say this often and this is my tag line, “Trust the process, Right things will happen at the right time”.
