In this Encounter with Jesus in John 8:1-11, we explore the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery. It starts with Jesus teaching in the Temple courts, interrupted by religious leaders who bring forth a woman caught in the act of adultery, setting up a trap to test Jesus.
Jesus responds by stooping down and writing on the ground, prompting the accusers to leave one by one after He challenges them with the requirement of being sinless to cast the first stone. We don’t know what Jesus wrote, but we reflect on the implications of His actions. Eventually, Jesus addresses the woman directly, showing mercy and telling her to sin no more.
Jesus fulfills the Law through forgiveness and mercy, contrasting it with the legalistic approach of the religious leaders. Discover and be reminded of our universal need for mercy and the power of Christ's sacrifice for all who believe in Him. Just when we were about to be condemned, Christ stepped in and saved us.
