  • Melody Miller Mann at Podapalooza: 40 Countries, $1,200, and the Day Jesus Called Her by Name

    Episode summary

Recorded live during the Podapalooza #16 virtual marathon, this episode welcomes author, retired nurse, and journalist Melody Miller Mann, RN, BSN, BJ. In 1973, fresh out of the University of Texas at Austin and leaving a dream job that turned sour, Melody walked into the post office instead of the unemployment office, applied for her passport, and set off with $1,200 and an overstuffed pink suitcase she nicknamed her “pink dinosaur.” Over 12 months she traveled solo through 40 countries.

But the greatest moment of the journey wasn't a landmark. Alone in the back of an ambulance in her 40th country, Melody realized she had pursued independence all the way to isolation. Days later, a stranger on a Dublin sidewalk invited her to pizza with his friends, and in the middle of their simple prayer of thanks, she encountered Jesus, who called her by a name almost no one ever used: Melody. Truth had found her.

Georgette and Melody talk about divine appointments, discovering your God-given purpose, the “miracle hire” that launched her medical-writing career, her personal journey with natural health, the knee injury she calls an “obedience injury,” and why it's never too late to learn, grow, and begin again. Melody's new memoir, Truth Found Me, is endorsed by Jack Canfield as “a real page-turner.”

    • Coach Mo Cooper: Your Best Health Is Hiding in Your Calendar - Live from Podapalooza

      Episode Summary

Recorded live in the Podatorium at Podapalooza, this episode brings Georgette together with Maureen “Coach Mo” Cooper, a Healthy Lifestyle and Nutrition Coach who lost more than 65 pounds and has kept it off for over 15 years. Georgette opens with honesty about her own lifelong struggle with weight and self-esteem, and Mo meets her there with warmth, humor, and hard-won wisdom.

Mo shares how years of putting herself last — raising three little ones in constant chaos — finally shifted with an unlikely gift: a Wii workout game that sat in its box for three weeks. That small, goofy start became a 5 AM habit, and that hour of “just me” time became the beginning of her transformation. She explains why her signature talk says your best health is hiding in your calendar: your calendar has no feelings and doesn’t judge what you look like in a bikini. It simply shows you where your time, energy, and thoughts are going.

Together they unpack why willpower isn’t the answer for women who have tried every diet, why restriction only adds pressure, and why lasting change is about building on rock instead of shifting sand. Mo tells the moving story behind the name Mo Mind Body Soul — born in a moment of making the sign of the cross on a drive home — and describes herself as a “backdoor preacher” who weaves faith into wellness because peace is critical to lowering stress. She also shares her morning routine, the SOAP journaling method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer), the books that shaped her, and a beautiful prayer: “Lord, empty me… fill me… use me.”

      In This Episode

      • Why putting yourself last isn’t heroic — and why nobody hands out medals for it
      • The Wii workout game (and the awkward Christmas gift) that changed everything
      • The 5 AM hour: finding time when nobody wants a piece of you
      • What your calendar has to do with losing weight — and why it’s the neutral place to start
      • Why “we don’t need more discipline, we need less pressure”
      • How forbidden foods make us think about them all the more
      • The Holy Trinity story behind the name Mo Mind Body Soul
      • The secret to keeping weight off for 15+ years: less stress, not perfection
      • The SOAP journaling method: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
      • Breaking free from all-or-nothing thinking
      • Mo’s heart-to-heart café guest — and the prayer that changed her mornings
      • Memorable Moments

        • Georgette Beck - Book Gems 2: Choosing a Life, Practicing Love, Doing the Right Thing

          Episode Description

In this Junk to Jewels “Book Gems” episode, Georgette Beck shares reflections from three books that touched her heart: Peter Mayle's My 25 Years in Provence, Anne Lamott's Somehow: Thoughts on Love, and Ryan Holiday's Right Thing Right Now. She traces Mayle's life change from advertising to writing and his affectionate, humorous vignettes of Provençal culture, using his story to challenge listeners to choose a life intentionally and to embrace changing seasons — including grief and loss. Drawing from Lamott, Georgette explores love as a daily practice: the role of community, healthy boundaries, vulnerability, and loving across divides. From Holiday, she highlights justice as a foundational virtue — doing the right thing even without recognition — and the balance between justice and mercy, and expanding our circle of moral concern beyond our own tribe.

Peter Mayle — My 25 Years in Provence: Reflections on Then and Now

Peter Mayle (1939–2018) was a British advertising executive turned author, best known for his 1989 international bestseller A Year in Provence, which inspired a generation of readers and travelers to fall in love with the south of France. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by the French government for his cultural contribution to the relationship between France and the English-speaking world. My 25 Years in Provence was his final book, published posthumously as a love letter to his adopted home.

Anne Lamott — Somehow: Thoughts on Love

Anne Lamott is one of America's most beloved spiritual writers, essayists, and novelists, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the author of twenty books, including the New York Times bestsellers Bird by Bird, Traveling Mercies, Help, Thanks, Wow, and Dusk, Night, Dawn. Somehow: Thoughts on Love, her twentieth book, was a #1 New York Times bestseller and one of Publishers Weekly's Best Religion Books of 2024, known for its honesty, humor, and deep faith.

          Instagram: @annelamott

Ryan Holiday — Right Thing Right Now: Good Values. Good Character. Good Deeds.

Ryan Holiday is one of the most influential writers on Stoic philosophy working today. A college dropout who apprenticed under author Robert Greene at age 19, he has since sold more than five million books in over 40 languages, including The Obstacle Is the Way, Ego Is the Enemy, Stillness Is the Key, and The Daily Stoic. He lives outside Austin, Texas, where he owns and runs The Painted Porch Bookshop in Bastrop. Right Thing Right Now is the third installment in his Stoic Virtues series, following Courage Is Calling and Discipline Is Destiny, and debuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list.

          • Dr. Tamara Monosoff: From Gray Divorce to Badass — Rebuilding Life After 50

            Episode Summary

On this episode of the Junk to Jewels™ Podcast, Georgette Beck sits down with Dr. Tamara Monosoff (as part of the Podapalooza event) — a therapist, entrepreneur, and author holding a master's in marriage and family therapy and a doctorate in women's leadership — to talk about rebuilding life after her unexpected gray divorce ended a 38-year relationship. Tamara opens up about the identity loss, shame, isolation, and financial and social fears that so often follow a divorce after 50, and why grief has no timeline and can't be rushed.

Georgette and Tamara explore how loneliness inside a marriage and unspoken truths can quietly erode connection, and why healing moves faster in community rather than alone. Tamara shares the small daily habits, long-deferred classes, and simple hellos that helped her recover — along with her leap to move to Portugal and finally pursue a childhood dream. It's an honest, hope-filled conversation about grief, reinvention, and discovering who you are on the other side of loss.

            • The Formula 4 Man: Gregory Halpern on Healing, Faith & Human Potential

              Episode Description

Gregory Jesse Halpern joins Georgette Beck on the Junk to Jewels™ Podcast for one of the most extraordinary conversations the show has ever featured. Known by many as the “13 Lives Renaissance Man,” Greg has survived thirteen documented near-death experiences — beginning at age five — and emerged from each one with a radically transformed understanding of purpose, suffering, and the human spirit. In this conversation, Greg walks Georgette through his very first crossing as a child, the 2005 chlorine-gas incident that unlocked over 3,000 principles of universal wisdom in three days, and the mentors — Zig Ziglar, Earl Nightingale, and W. Clement Stone — who shaped how he processed it all. • From Nicaragua to New Beginnings: Lindsey Tercero's Story of Grit and Grace

At just 17, Lindsey Tercero has already lived a story worth telling. A recent graduate of Fort Pierce Central High School and a Bella Healing Hearts Foundation scholarship recipient, Lindsey immigrated from Nicaragua during her sophomore year — arriving with limited English and an unshakeable determination to build a new life. In this heart-to-heart conversation, she opens up about founding her school's first Spanish National Honor Society chapter, serving as FBLA president, losing her father at age eight, navigating her mother's return to Nicaragua for medical care, and finding "family of the heart" in unexpected places. Lindsey shares her love of literature (1984 by George Orwell), her senior quote from Dostoevsky's White Nights, and her big dream of becoming an immigration or real estate attorney. This fall, she begins her Associate of Arts at Indian River State College — and she's just getting started.

                    • Vicky Tiel: From Paris Couture to Farm Life — Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel & Choosing Happiness

Georgette Beck welcomes legendary Paris couturier Vicky Tiel to the Junk to Jewels™ Podcast for a conversation that moves from a Parsons School rejection to a couture empire built at the heart of Hollywood glamour. Vicky shares how she arrived in Paris at twenty with a dream, a best friend, and a lace mini dress — and how that dress caught Elizabeth Taylor's eye and launched a twenty-five-year friendship.

The two swap stories of a legendary dinner with Coco Chanel, who made both women promise to create a perfume — a promise that led to Elizabeth Taylor's bestselling fragrance and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and to Vicky's own perfume, complete with a bottle she hand-sculpted herself. Vicky opens up about decades of jet-set living, celebrity and royal clients, a difficult divorce, and the transformation that followed when she married a Key West fisherman, moved to a quiet farm, and gave up drinking and smoking for good, thirty years and counting.

Throughout the episode, Vicky returns again and again to one message: happiness is a daily choice. From dressing-room confessions to lessons Elizabeth Taylor taught her about kindness and generosity, from faith to the healing power of nature, Vicky's story is a masterclass in turning what felt broken into something beautiful — proof that it's never too late to choose joy.

                    • Mercy in the Mess: Lori Stanley Roeleveld on Writing Through Loss, MS, and Estrangement

                      Episode Description

In this episode of the Junk to Jewels™ Podcast, Georgette sits down with author, speaker, and coach Lori Stanley Roeleveld — self-described "disturber of hobbits" — for a conversation that moves from a complicated childhood in Hope Valley, Rhode Island to a lifetime of persevering faith. Lori shares what it was like growing up in a home shaped by untreated mental health struggles and alcohol, coming to Christ at age four during a televised Billy Graham Crusade, and spending her early school years reading and writing alone in the school library after testing years ahead of grade level. She opens up about her father's 65-year career as a firefighter and 51 years as fire chief, his remarkable transformation, the sudden estrangement from her mother and brother the day her father died, her husband Rob's MS diagnosis, and a near-fatal dog attack on the job. Lori and Georgette also dig into the writing life — Lori's viral 2014 blog post that reached over two million readers, her process for writing seven award-winning books (including her newest, God's Abundant Mercy), and what it means to live on "the Lord's faith payroll." It's a rich, honest conversation about mercy, resilience, and finding the jewels in the junk.

                      Listener Takeaways

                      • How childhood hardship — and even being labeled "different" — can become the training ground for a lifelong ministry of words
                      • Why success can be just as spiritually dangerous as failure, and the importance of asking God to keep sanctification ahead of platform growth
                      • How to hold onto faith through parental estrangement, chronic illness in marriage, and unexpected trauma
                      • A practical writing process (the "madwoman, architect, carpenter, judge" method) for anyone trying to write in the margins of a full life
                      • What it looks like to trust God's provision — living on "the Lord's faith payroll" — when income doesn't look like a steady paycheck
                      • Chapter Timestamps

Lori Stanley Roeleveld is an author, speaker, coach, and disturber of hobbits. She teaches biblical truth with gentle humor and invites weary believers back to the narrow road through her ministry of words. She has written seven award-winning books, including her newest release, God's Abundant Mercy (Our Daily Bread Publishing), and her sixth book won the Golden Scroll Award for Christian Living Book of the Year in 2024. Though she holds degrees in psychology and biblical studies from Barrington College (now merged with Gordon College), Lori says she has learned the most from studying her Bible in life's trenches. She spent much of her career working in human services with teens and families in crisis. Lori is a wife, retired homeschool mom, mother of adults, and "Omi" to five grandsons. She and her husband Rob have been married 37 years and live in a 130-year-old house in Rhode Island that is his ongoing restoration project.
