Get ready to hear Toria butcher a lot of names! Just a Little Pod is back with a full episode to kickoff Dwarfism Awareness Month. For the month of October, we will be discussing all things dwarfism starting with the history so buckle up! Ronisha is still out on a sabbatical but she will be back soon so hold tight! Toria is holding it down and dropping gems in this episode. She goes down the timeline of where it all started and where we are now. There is a lot of work to still be done but our hope is to provide enough awareness so we can undo the harmful things little people face.

In this episode, Ronisha and Toria have an open conversation about the intersections of being black and disabled. We use the life of Emmett Till to help us explore those intersections and why we often erase disability from people's stories. Did you know Emmett had a disability?
We also spent ten minutes roasting Carolyn Bryant, the woman who lied about Emmett that ultimately led to his brutal death.

So of course, we had to talk about DaBaby and his homophobic shenanigans. We discuss the importance of removing the stigma around HIV/AIDS. His comments were unacceptable and he needs to be accountable for his actions. On a brighter note, we talk about Simone Biles putting her mental health first and the people are mad. Mental health is just as important as physical health and she did the best thing for herself! We're here for it! Lastly, we discussed the controversial drug that is marketed to "cure" dwarfism. Toria has thoughts and she's not here for it.

We mentioned one of the wonderful people who are on the ground providing HIV awareness and education, you can learn something from them. George Johnson (@IAmGMJohnson on Twitter) speaks about this topic and also has a book.

This episode we will talk about how real internalized ableism is. Toria realizes she struggles with internalized ableism and is working through it. We tried not to make this a sad episode.
We talk about the viral video of the woman crying about Delta Airline staff breaking her wheelchair. We also talk about Naomi Osaka and her decision to not speak to press due to her mental health. We support these women and show love to both of them.
If you’re struggling with the internalized feelings just know you’re not alone. Blame the system, don’t blame yourself. It’s all of their fault.

Today’s episode we discuss the strange encounters Toria has to go through on a regular basis. Toria has had people take pictures, point, laugh, and make comments. It’s not okay. Disabled people should go places and not have their peace disrupted.
We discuss why it’s problematic to do these things and what you can do instead. If you are able-bodied and see a disabled person, understand they still have boundaries so please be respectful.
We also advise you on how to explain to your children about disabilities. Avoid othering language and just be honest with them about the person’s disability.
