Alright I have a confession to make. The first time I learned about Juneteenth was from an episode of Black-ish! (aired in 2017).
Now, I don't recall learning about it in my school history books and it wasn’t a holiday people asked how I celebrated. So, watching that episode pushed me to do my own investigation and this is what I’ve learned:
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the legal freedom of slaves in the United States.
The first Juneteenth celebration took place in Texas on June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. (1863)
Texas makes Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980*.
Juneteenth is also called “Emancipation Day,” “Jubilee Day,” and “Juneteenth Independence Day.”
