Join us Wednesday evening at 7pm central, in the chat, and ask Bianca questions. She started paragliding in 1995 in Germany. At the time, living in Hamburg in the northern part of Germany, which is quite flat. So she starting flying at the coast and dunes. She had friends in Hamburg who got her into the sport. After a year or so of them teaching her how to kite and fly at the coast, she figured she would get a license and went down to southern Germany where the big mountains were. She got her license in 1996 and moved to the U.S. in 2000. That's when she started to get more and more into thermal flying and XC since the location and weather was so much better than back in Hamburg. She suddenly was flying all the time and really enjoyed the New England flying community. Originally, she was supposed to go back to Germany after 2 yrs, but decided to stick around for grad school. She went for her PhD at Boston University in Cell and Molecular Biology, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. At some point she got into competitions - they teach you a lot and you get to meet new people. Over time a lot of friendships developed out of that. The flying community in the U.S. is wonderful! She calls it my PG family these days. She went on to become the National Women's Champion FOUR TIMES. It is fun to travel around the world to explore new flying sites- Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and of course Europe. She and her partner hike & fly competitions as he enjoys that. In the future, they may take small groups to the Alps and the Pyrenees since we know these areas quite well.
She has gone through a bit of a cancer scare, discovering a large tumor in her uterus, but hopefully caught early, to live a long and healthy life! She now does CT scans EVERY 3 MONTHS, and doing great so far!! She wants to encourage all ladies to do regular check-ups with their doctors!!
