Tragedy struck South Dakota State's football program and campus on Wednesday when it was announced that running back Nate White had died at the age of 20.
As of the publishing of this content, the cause of death has not been publicly determined or announced. Coaches and teammates had rushed to social media to honor White, while the Jackrabbit Former Players Association had raised $17,000 in about 36 hours to help White's family.
White, a Milwaukee native, was a transfer from the University of Wisconsin and had been at the school for a few months, including the entire duration of spring football camp. He was a top candidate to start or at least factor heavily for the Jackrabbits this fall and had earned high praise from coaches and teammates.
In the first public spoken comments from an SDSU athletic official about White's passing, athletic director Justin Sell opened his Friday "Happy Hour" interview with John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer regarding SDSU's decision to "opt in" to the NCAA-House Settlement by describing how he and others have processed the tragedy.
