K-Botak: K-Drama and Korean Movies

Get ready for a double bill of horror mystery films, both of which are on Netflix for your viewing pleasure.

First, Svaha: The Sixth Finger, where the amazing Lee Jung-jae from Squid Game investigates murders connected to bizarre worshippers in the mountains of Gangwon-do Province.

And second The 8th Night, where an axe-wielding monk sets out to destroy a demon that was previously defeated by Buddha.

This week I'm reviewing the Apple TV+ series Dr. Brain, the debut Korean language original on the service. Lee Sunkyun plays Koh Sewon, a genius scientist able to plug his mind into the brains of the dead.

By the way, although I like this show very much, it doesn't handle the topic of autism well. If you would like to know more about some of the misconceptions about people on the spectrum, please have a read below.

I review Spiritwalker, a fun and kinetic sci fi thriller in which an agent wakes up in a different body every 12 hours. Yoon Kye-sang stars.

Hellbound was so good I had to do a full spoilercast and talk about its intricate story and heavy themes in more detail. See the feed for my spoiler-free review, posted the prior week. For this one, I'll be spoiling every character, event and story beat, so be warned!

Hellbound is a new dark fantasy series on Netflix from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, starring Yoo Ah-in, Kim Hyun-joo, Yang Ik-june and others.

Check out the #CountdownToHellbound episodes from the K-botak podcast including Train to Busan, Peninsula, Psychokinesis, Burning and Voice of Silence.

How do you go about remaking one of the greatest zombie movies of all time? Well, the fantastic Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto has been given the keys to Yeon Sang-ho's brilliant Train to Busan. Could be a match made in heaven, but I thought I would just put to tape a few of my ideas on how they could really make this a banger.

Make sure there's plenty of chapagetti in the cupboard and cover the windows with whatever is to hand - you might not be going out for a while! This episode I'm covering the unnervingly timely #ALIVE, where Yoo Ah-in (star of Hellbound) plays a gamer stuck at home as a zombie outbreak happens outside the window.

South Korean thriller movies are a rich genre, and it is alive and well in 2021. Here are two contemporary movies from this year that you should get watched before the end of the year. The amnesia drama Recalled evokes the extreme vulnerability of losing your memories, while the intense Midnight is a vicious street-by-street chase movie with a deranged serial killer played by Squid Game's Wi Ha-jun.
