You had never seen Shaun so upset and distraught in all the time you've known him. When you'd climbed into the bed you both are sharing in his Mother's home of Ta Lo, he was somehow still wide awake, even after you told him to get some rest while you went for a walk in the rain with Katy and Xialing to chat about the days you all had. "I'm not who you think I am," He murmurs, laying on his back, gaze focused solely on the ceiling above. Confusion pricks your thoughts as you lay down at his side, joining him in admiring the ceiling. "You already apologized for that, you're good," You assure softly, rolling onto your side to face him. Shaun does the same, such sorrow and guilt glimmering in his usually warm gaze, it makes you realize that it seems there is more to his story than he originally let on. "That's not what I'm talking about." A brief silence settles between the pair of you, waiting for him to continue. "When my Dad sent me to find the man who killed my Mom, I told you I couldn't go through with it..." Your Partner sighs shakily, pausing for a moment, his gaze resting heavy on yours. And in your heart, you can already feel the pain of what his next few words are going to be. "I lied." At this, your heart instantly shatters, his words tugging at your heartstrings. "I thought that I could change my name, start a new life, pretend like it never happened..." Shang-Chi's voice cracks, a sniffle following close behind as if he's holding back tears. "She would hate the person I've become." Resting a hand on his shoulder, you sigh softly, fingers gently running circles against his bare skin in hopes to soothe his worries. "Your Dad trained you to be a literal assassin when you were just a kid," You explain, a ghost of a smile gracing your lips. "You realize how messed up that is, right?" Shaun's own lips twitch upwards into a watery, cracked smile before instantly fading as fast as it had appeared, his expression becoming serious once more. "My Mom is dead because of him and now he's coming to destroy her home," He murmurs, tone becoming solid, a trace of danger falling into it. All you can do is lay beside him silently, waiting for him to finish his thoughts. "I'm gonna do what he trained me to do," Shang-Chi states firmly, though his voice once more begins to waver, a sniffle evident yet again. "I'm gonna kill him." Pained surprise ripples through you at that remark, though after briefly meeting Wenwu, you can sort of understand your Partner's resolution. And, after seeing Shaun's attitude completely shift the entire time and since the Mandarin had caught up with the four of you in Macau, it's easy to assume that the man laying beside you has been through much, much more than he ever lets on. "Alright," Is all you breathe as your Partner reaches towards you, eyes glistening with fresh tears, threatening to spill over. And as the pair of you lay there in each other's arms, listening to the sound of the rain and the distant melodies playing on the wind, you can't help but come to your own resolution. We can stop Wenwu without killing him... we just have to make sure he and Shaun don't go at it alone... Taking one last glance at your Partner, you smile inwardly, his eyes closed, his breathing becoming rhythmic. "I guess that means I'm sticking by your side like glue tomorrow." And with that, you allow yourself to drift along in a slumber, hoping that the events of tomorrow won't end in catastrophe.
