This is a message for the festival of Pentecost on John 16:7-11. It looks at how the Holy Spirit is the Advocate who continues to prosecute the case for Christ in the hearts and minds of people. As Jesus says, the Holy Spirit convicts or proves the world wrong concerning sin, righteousness and judgment, or as one modern translation puts it, concerning what's wrong, what's right, and who's won.   

This is the second instalment of a two part interview with Lutheran pastor Dr John Kleinig on his personal spiritual journey. This episode covers the period of his life from post-graduate studies in Cambridge, through his long teaching career at Luther Seminary in Adelaide (later Australian Lutheran College), and reflections on the difficult church debates Dr Kleinig has been involved in over the years. This Good Friday sermon looks at the Passion account of St John in John 18-19 and examines the trial/s of Jesus under the religious leaders, Pontius Pilate and Herod. It asks the question, who is really on trial? The irony is that Jesus is the only truly innocent one while everyone else is shown to be guilty. This is  humanity's trial - this is our trial. But as the innocent one is condemned in our place, so we the guilty are set free.  

In this conversation I sit down with Dr Michael Lockwood to discuss themes arising from his book 'The Unholy Trinity: Martin Luther against the idol of me, myself and I'. We talk about how prominent the theme of idolatry is in Luther's writing and the Bible itself, how Michael personally was challenged by confronting his own idols during his research, and how helpful this paradigm is for reaching our culture with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
