John 8:1-11 presents the vivid story of the woman caught in adultery, who is brought to Jesus by the Pharisees intent on accusing him. The Bible interestingly states that Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. Finally, when the crowd left without stoning the woman, Jesus stood up and asked her about the accusers. A remarkable thing we observe here is that Jesus avoided any deed or word that would have made the condemned woman feel ashamed or guilty.

We should take courage in the fact that even as Jesus was dying on the Cross, his most agonising moment on earth, he was praying for us. Even in the most painful suffering, we are never alone. It is beautiful to remember that not only do we receive grace through our own prayers, but that we have also been prayed for by Jesus to the Father. And so, with prayer and with life, there remains only to have courage and hope, and with this courage and hope, to feel the prayer of Jesus strongly and to keep on going, so that our life may be one of giving glory to God.

‘Your youth groups are a nice blend, from cities and villages, English and vernacular speaking, college youth and uneducated, fashionable and ordinary. You use western songs and local tunes, and all feel part of it.’ Manuel from Madras, visiting us in the early days of Jesus Youth, was surprised at the cultural variety here. In his place, city youth and rural youth gathered separately, used different songs and prayer styles. Surprisingly, those culturally divided groups disappeared, but Jesus Youth drew strength from its multicultural approaches and grew.
