Latest data available with India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) show that the number of companies incorporated during April-December 2020 went up by nearly 21% to over 1.1 lakh, compared to a 5.2% increase witnessed during the corresponding nine month period in 2019, as per a newspaper report today. India's overall score has fallen from 6.9 in 2019 to 6.61 in the Index that provides a snapshot of the current state of democracy worldwide for 167 countries. India has been classified as a 'flawed democracy' along with countries such as the US, France, Belgium and Brazil. This means that India and the US - the world's largest and biggest democracies - are "flawed democracies", as per EIU's report. Time for some deep introspection? According to the just-released Oxfam’s ‘Inequality Virus Report,’ India's billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown whereas millions lost their jobs during the same period. The first casualties when there is a wide gap in income levels is the attention to healthcare and education, mainly by the people at the lowest strata of society. 2020, even though gone, will stay with us forever. Obviously for the pain it inflicted on many but also teachings and being a blessing in disguise in several things for humanity as well as individuals.
