Shivaratri Special : Kashikapuradhinatha kalabhairvam bhaje . Kalabhirava is a form of Lord Shiva, the destroyer of Adharma, Protector of Dharma, Lord of Death and Bestower of Liberation. This fierce form of Shiva worshipped in Kashi is described and adored by Sri Adishankaracharya in this beautiful composition. 8 verses or Ashtakam are followed by one verse of Phalashruti, the benefits of saying this stotram.
Sri Kalabhairava may be a fierce form but is seen as the protector of the people of Kashi and therefore is a compassionate deity. Moreover, Kala/Time denotes past, present and future. As kalabhairava, he is the controller of time. As the Yogi He conveys that one should be ever present in the present. The past does not exist anymore, and the future is yet to pass, what we are living in is the present. Thus, the only reality is the present and we should be 100% in the present. And once we are able to imbibe this knowledge and practice it, we are in the path to Liberation.
Adoring and worshipping Sri Bhairava is meant to lead one in this path of life and liberation. This Shivaratri, may the Lord facilitate our growth in this direction! Om namah Shivaya!
