On today’s breakfast show I warmed up the studio with new music from independent artists and welcomed my long-time friend Darren Thomas – former RAF Police and Greater Manchester Police officer turned author, poet and comedian. We traced his journey from life inside the institution to rebuilding with a pen, reflecting on discretion in policing, Freemasonry’s quiet influence, burnout, and how target-driven bureaucracy reshaped a service once rooted in community. Darren shared frontline memories from 1990s Salford, why many join with good intent, and why awareness (more than “awake”) is the path back to personal responsibility and sanity. We also riffed on symbolism and language around policing – from Peel and the Met to “boys in blue,” checkerboard caps, and etymology – before touching on resilience, mental health and creative practice.
