Melba Beals is a hero to me, and to the nation, as one of nine little girls who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September of 1957. Episode #15 of Inspiring Teachers brings me back to an interview with my mentor, and Civil rights icon, Melba Pattillo Beals. I did not know that when I entered into my first radio broadcasting class at Dominican University of California, and met my professor, who corrected me from saying Mrs. Beals, and told me to call her Melba. Melba was my teacher for three straight semesters, and taught me a lot more than just how to be a broadcaster with ethics.
Melba taught me about history, life, and how to be a morally guided and well-rounded person. In 2017 I sat down with Melba for an audio interview, and I find it to be one of the most inspiring interviews that I have ever captured. Education carried Melba through many adventures, books, and successes, and she shares her story with us on Inspiring Teachers.

When I feel tired at the end of teaching, I know I gave a good effort, and Dave definitely advocates for a tapping into energy in the classroom to draw in students like magnets to engaging lessons. Dave was certainly fired up in our interview, no surprise, and brought a lot of heart, and an exclusive story about Dave’s development in entertainment and performance before education.
