In Philippians chapter 1 verse 27 Paul instructs all believers to conduct their lives in a manner worthy of the gospel. In part four of this teaching, the living out is emphasized through the Bible passage, Philippians chapter 2 verses 12 and 13.
Three things highlighted in this passage are:
Command to obey is given - “...work out your own salvation”
Here are some personal and practical ways to work out your own salvation:
- Call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
- Continue to receive God’s grace
- Continue to manifest the fruit of the Holy Spirit
- Continue to go before God in prayer
- Continue to not reject the assembling of ourselves for worship - gather for corporate worship
- Daily reliance on God’s Word and meditating on it day and night
Condition for obedience is given - “not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”
- Your obedience must not be based on a person
- Work out your salvation all the time
- Salvation belongs to The Father, you cannot lose it. We work it out from love and reverence of God.
Consolation is given, for those who are striving to live that life - “…for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
- The reality of His working; God is holding on to you (for nothing can separate us from God)
- Our focus should be to please God and bring Him glory
- God’s working does not suspend or negate our own working
- God’s working should be the basis of our trust and effort
