Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, has criticised the Dean of University of Ghana Law School, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, over comments that the country’s worsening economic situation may create a fertile ground for political instability. Speaking at a public lecture on a review of the 1992 Constitution and its impact on the economy on Monday, Prof. Atuguba noted that Ghana’s current financial state is a threat to its democracy.

A 17-year-old Fulani herdsman, Sani Mohammed, has been gunned down at Sibriso, a village near Kwamekrom in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region. The father of the deceased, Alhaji Maude, was scandalised following the series of events in the district.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has petitioned the Commonwealth Secretariat to investigate and subsequently sanction the current administration over what the party calls bad governance and abuse of human rights. At a press briefing in Accra today, Monday, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, said the petition is to draw the attention of the international body to instances of abuse of the judiciary, political persecutions, and abuse of human rights.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Friday, February 25 2022, commissioned four new vessels acquired for use by the Ghana Navy, at a ceremony at the Sekondi-Takoradi Naval Base. The acquisition of these vessels, according to President Akufo-Addo, “is yet a further manifestation of the commitment of Government to retool and re-equip the Ghana Armed Forces to enable them to perform their duty of protecting the territorial integrity of our nation.”

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has denied reports that he gave permission to the Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to absent herself from the House, on health grounds. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, he stated that such reports are false, and urged the public to dismiss them.

There was pandemonium at the Law Court Complex in Accra when a prison officer inadvertently fired his weapon in a courtroom. Sources tell Joy News, the accidental discharge has left the officer wounded in the leg.

The Asokwa District Court in the Ashanti Region has discharged a senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Wilberforce Aggrey, who was standing trial for his alleged involvement in the disappearance of his wife, Rhodaline Amoah-Darko. He has however been rearrested as new charges have been filed against him at the High Court.

The distribution of nomination forms for prospective contestants in polling station executive elections turned chaotic at the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Manhyia North constituency in the Ashanti Region. The Sunday incident started when supporters protested a decision by the constituency executives to sell the forms to them when they had already been paid for by Benard Antwi Bosiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party.

Acting Director of Forecasting and Synoptic Meteorology, Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, has highlighted some implications of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) staff strike. Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, he said that airlines cannot fly into the country due to the strike. He noted that “the airlines currently flying into the country are doing so at their own risk” since he does not know where they are getting their weather updates from.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, is accusing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of settling personal scores. He alleged that Dr Akuffo Dampare is punishing him for not supporting his bid to be IGP prior to the appointment of former IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh.
