About This Episode of Book Crew

1. Dirk’s book on Tuesday
2. Feature Interview: STARR with Angel Nyx and Patricia Bates

Patricia Bates' episode was on May 5th, 2025.
Angel Nyx was our first episode with the new format on 3/31/2025.

STARR (Specialist Tactical Armaments and Regional Recon) was initially put together by a select group of like-minded Military and Police officials who saw a need for counterterrorism and
security services that couldn’t be provided through the proper channels. They operate under the radar and with a grey moral code - their motto is “Save the Innocent - even if it means burning
down the world.”

Patricia Bates and Angel Nyx said they were looking for more authors for their project STARR, so we’re opening up our platform to help promote the project and hopefully get them some new authors and some ARC readers and anything else they need because they are awesome!

This week for part 1, we check in to Colorado’s famously haunted Stanley Hotel—where the spirits are bold, the décor is cursed (looking at you, Room 217), and Stephen King got the idea for The Shining. Built by Freelan Stanley (tuberculosis survivor, inventor, and mustache icon), the hotel has seen explosions, eerie piano music, and some towel-folding ghosts with very specific energy. Also: the complicated history of the land it sits on, which, unsurprisingly, adds to the haunting.

This week, Faren dives into the very strange case of the Cirigliano family, who vanished from their Michigan home in 2022 under bizarre circumstances. Think: cryptic behavior, an unsettling 911 call, and a cross-country road trip that gave full Mr. Dursley-running-from-Hogwarts energy. No one was harmed… but no one really knows what happened either.

Jay D. Falor's fiction emerges from a life spent exploring Earth's most evocative places. From summoning ceremonies in Scottish highlands to nights spent in Roman nunneries, they've gathered tales where magic seems possible. Their studies of ancient cultures, from Mayan ruins to London's historic towers, inform the complex societies in their works. Born in Louisiana and raised in Sydney, their agender perspective brings fresh insight to questions of identity and belonging in speculative fiction. Their worlds challenge readers to imagine possibilities beyond traditional boundaries, whether exploring distant planets or the depths of human experience.
