In part two, John Van Hamersveld walks us through some of his most recognizable work — including the electric, hair-charged Jimi Hendrix poster that hung in the Carlsbad Museum during his visit, and his portraits of Beethoven and Mozart, each one built to capture the distinct energy of the composer's music rather than just their likeness.
He also tells the story behind "Johnny," the alter-ego character born out of a tiny 1914 false-teeth ad he stumbled on one sleepless night. What started as a doodle turned into a button, then a full billboard campaign across Los Angeles and Orange County.
The conversation turns personal as Van Hamersveld talks about growing up with dyslexia, the creative freedom it forced him to find outside the classroom, and his seven years teaching design at CalArts. He leaves young artists with one piece of advice: contemplate.

On this week’s Community Forum episodes, Hattie Quinn and local artist and friend of the station Anthony Green sat down with artist John Van Hamersveld in the Carlsbad Public Library’s Bob Scholl Memorial Room, fresh off his traveling exhibit “Crazy World, Ain’t It” and in the middle of a full day of art classes in Carlsbad. What started as a conversation about the show turned into a look back at a career most of us have seen or even been influenced by without ever knowing his name.
Van Hamersveld designed the iconic Endless Summer surf movie poster while still a design student — a piece that’s since become a sought-after collector’s item. That single poster opened the door to Capitol Records, where he found himself, portfolio in hand, walking into a career designing album covers. It’s also how he ended up sitting across from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, working with photographer Robert Frank on one of the Rolling Stones’ most recognizable album covers, followed by Jefferson Airplane’s Crown of Creation.
In part one, he walks us through how a teenage surfer with dyslexia became one of the era's most influential visual artists — and sets up a story that, ten years later, would help launch an entirely new art movement. Tune in Thursday for part two.
Also — tomorrow on Mid-Week Matters, Endymion does an Artist Spotlight on Van Hamersveld’s work, so don’t miss that either.
