We’ve been reporting a lot on the 48,000-strong Academic Worker strike happening on all nine of University of California’s campuses. On November 30th 2022, at around 10:30 p.m., bargaining team representatives for UC’s graduate student researchers, TA’s, tutors, and readers brought revised demands to university system leaders at the bargaining table. Many graduate students were disappointed by the demands themselves, which we covered during last week’s newscast on December 1st and which you can find wherever you get your podcasts under KCSB News. Two days later, the UC called the bargaining team back to the table with their offer. I got the rundown on the latest earlier today from PhD student Emily Fox, who you’ve heard from a lot over the past several weeks via our airwaves.

A lot has changed over the past two weeks for the 48,000 Academic Workers currently on strike across all nine UC campuses. The strike started on November 14, and new updates come in nearly every day from the bargaining table and the various picket lines across the state. KCSB’s Jackie Sedley has been staying in touch with Emily Fox, a PhD student at UC Santa Barbara who is actively participating in the strike. She spoke with Fox yesterday about the status of demands from workers and final grades for students, but in the 24 hours since, things have already changed.
