The general disillusion with the current 2016 major presidential candidates may suggest one thing: That we need to take more seriously our third party candidates.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation recently honored Noam Chomsky as the 2016 Distinguished Peace Leader. In his acceptance speech, Noam Chomsky, an activist, linguist, philosopher, humanitarian, author, and Professor Emeritus at MIT contends that humanity faces two major threats: nuclear warfare and human induced environmental catastrophe. This is an important election season for Isla Vista. Voters will decide whether to create a 'Community Services District' in Isla Vista, giving residents more municipal independence.

One of the most competitive local races is for the 3rd District Seat on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. Tonight, you'll hear from both candidates, Joan Hartmann and Bruce Porter, in interviews recorded at KCSB FM ahead of the June primary elections.

Isla Vista has been party central during Halloweens of years past. But, in recent years, the party has gotten smaller.

The combined efforts of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol and UC Santa Barbara to limit access to out-of-owners through parking crack downs and other means, seem to be working.

Lt. Mark Signa with the UC Police Department joined KCSB host Dick Flacks and UCSB's George Thurlow to talk about what is planned for this Halloween. They also talked about a new proposed noise ordinance, which would require residents to turn down loud music by 10pm weekends, instead of midnight.

Stress is an unfortunate part of daily life for many people. A free program at UC Santa Barbara is being held in October, offering ways to reduce stress by practicing 'mindfulness.' The event is being led by Dr. Jay Winner. He's a Santa Barbara family physician and author.

KCSB's Eunice Tree spoke with Dr. Winner to find out more about this mindfulness program at UCSB and how he first became interested in stress reduction and mindfulness.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents a free community screening of the acclaimed documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age, with an introduction and post-screening Q&A with Scilla Andreen, one of the film’s producers and the CEO of IndieFlix, on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara.
