KCSB's Dick Flacks and UCSB's George Thurlow discuss the housing situation in Isla Vista, as students come back to town for "Move-In Weekend."

UC Santa Barbara third-year public policy and environmental studies double major, Marjan Abubo, along with some of his friends, traveled to North Dakota to stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline. He explains to KCSB’s Nkechi Ikem what motivated him to go and what other students can do to bring about positive change.

Aetna Healthcare's decision to pull out services from the Affordable Care Act has put the national program in an unstable spot. KCSB reporter Harry Lawton speaks with Professor Theodore Anagnoson about the current status of the Affordable Care Act. The discussion also includes rising drug prices, the Mylan EpiPens scandal and California Proposition 61, which proposes a cap on drug prices.

The building of the Dakota Access Pipeline, proposed to carry 500,000 gallons of oil from North Dakota to Illinois, has sparked protest among the Standing Rock Sioux and neighboring tribes. To oppose the pipeline, the tribes have taken to legal and civil unrest. The Sioux tribe filed a formal request to halt the building of the pipeline. However, this morning a district judge denied the request for a temporary injunction against the U.S. government. To add to the confusion, the government has issued a statement to halt the construction of the pipeline. Tribes are continuing with their protest until it is sure that the pipeline will not be built. KCSB’s Kendra Lee spoke with Julie Tumamait Stenslie, Tribal Chair of the Barbareño Ventureño band of Chumash to find out more about the consequences that will occur if this pipeline is built.

Uniontown, Alabama suffers from undrinkable water due to a deteriorating water filter and little is being done about it. Ben Eaton, a representative of the Black Belt Citizens, says no one has done anything simply because the town is poor and heavily African-American. KCSB's Nkechi Ikem spoke with him to understand how the same negligence that occurred in Flint, Michigan actually exists all around the United States.

A recent story in the New York Times suggested that abrupt changes in personality may be early warning signs for Alzheimers disease. To learn more, KCSB’s Lisa Osborn spoke with Dr. Kenneth Kosik, co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at UC Santa Barbara, and Harriman professor of Neuroscience.

Then, Bob Weiss and Christina Pizarro, share details on their efforts to put an end to gun violence in the USA, and and the "Concert to End Gun Violence" on Sept. 25th at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara.

On September 25th, artists and activists working toward ending gun violence will band together, holding concerts at 200 venues across America. One of the major shows is taking place at The Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara.

KCSB’s Lisa Osborn spoke with two members of the committee organizing this concert, Christina Pizarro and Bob Weiss. Bob’s daughter, Veronika Weiss, was killed in the Isla Vista tragedy of two years ago, when a deranged young man killed six UCSB students in Isla Vista. Weiss and Pizarro explain the mission behind the “Concert Across America to end Gun Violence” shows.

New and returning students are making their way to UC Santa Barbara. The pressures of performing in college, in a new place, when some students are away from home for the first time can bring up feelings of stress and anxiety.

KCSB’s Lisa Osborn spoke with psychologist Dr. Kali Lantrip, an interpersonal violence specialist at the Counseling and Psychological services “CAPS” at UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Kali is based out of The “Gaucho Support Center” in Isla Vista.
