Last year’s el nino left East Africa extremely dry and without resources. How do you stop people from going hungry when there is no water to grow food? Shrad Shukla, an Assistant Researcher with the Climate Hazards Group at UCSB and Chris Funk, a research geographer at UCSB are working with Chris Shitote, the Assistant Regional Scientist of east Africa to inform policymakers of hazardous climate conditions months ahead of time. KCSB's Kendra Lee spoke with them about el nino conditions, how these conditions have affected East African harvests, and the NASA SERVIR program.

Melissa Cohen with the IV Food Coop and Julia Lara with THRIVE Isla Vista at Isla Vista Youth Projects, talk about food assistance resources in Isla Vista, as well as other programs geared toward providing healthy, nutritious food for local students. Like or dislike Hillary Clinton, it is clear that sexism in American politics will affect her run as a presidential candidate. Santa Barbara Communications Consultant Lois Phillips wrote a blog post titled Hillary Clinton’s Chortle, Giggle, Cackle, or Chuckle: Who’ll have the last laugh? In the post, Phillips explains how the criticism of Hillary’s laugh represents a larger double standard that women face to balance likeability, appearance, and effectiveness. In a conversation with KCSB’s Nkechi Ikem, Lois Phillips described the problems female candidates face and how she coaches women to navigate sexism in politics.

Ventura residents who live near the site of a 45-thousand gallon oil spill have organized, in an effort to get the company responsible for the spill to do more to clean it up. State senator Hannah Beth Jackson and assembly member Das Williams joined a room full of residents at a meeting Thursday to get an update on the spill. Mary Haffner, a founding member of the Ventura Oil Spill Neighbors, explains spoke with KCSB’s Lisa Osborn. She explains the current conditions of her neighborhood.

California Lutheran University is opening a new Autism and Communication Center to serve youth, ranging from preschool to college students . The center will provide both programs and workshops, as well conduct research. KCSB Reporter Nkechi Ikem speaks to one of the directors, Dr. Beth Brennan, about the new center.
