The government of Turkey has declared a state of emergency. The president is cracking down on any elements of opposition to his regime following last week's failed coup. KCSB's Harry Lawton spoke with Santa Barbara-based international journalist Ann Louise Bardach about the situation and its long term implications.

KCSB invited radio activist and former pirate radio host Pete Tridish to talk about the history of low-power fm stations in the United States. Low-power fm stations are radio stations that operate to serve a specific community in an educational and non-commercial way. In the nineties, Pete Tridish founded the Prometheus Radio Project, an organization that has helped to build many low-power community radio stations. In doing so, Pete lobbied the FCC to provide low-power licences around the nation and fight media consolidation. This is part one of a three part conversation, where Pete Tridish talks about the problem with the term “free-media” and how it may confuse the importance of regulation when it comes to radio licensing.

Cintron is the new commander of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol, consisting of officers from the County Sheriff's Department as well as the UC Police Department.

July 6 & 7th 2006, five top editors at the Santa Barbara News Press resigned. They claimed the newspaper’s wealthy publisher - Wendy McCaw was interfering with the paper’s news gathering and reporting activities. That was the beginning of what turned out to be a dramatic year for the newsroom staff at Santa Barbara's oldest newspaper. Eight reporters were fired - and legal action continues to this day. A non-profit that cares for Isla Vista's youngest residents was among several local groups that received a generous donation from the Women's Fund of Santa Barbara. LuAnn Miller, executive director of the Isla Vista Youth Project shared the news with KCSB's Lisa Osborn.
