Keep Rolling with Jake Briggs episodes

  • Episode 73: #072 Tom Whitehouse

Tom Whitehouse, a wildlife conservationist, has spent more than 20 years working with dangerous reptiles, mammals and birds in the zoo and wildlife industry. Today he runs Coastal Wildlife Management.

In a single day he might relocate a red bellied black snake out of a family's laundry, carve a habitat hollow into a living tree, and manage feral cats through a thermal scope at two in the morning.

We explore the impact feral cats, foxes, pigs, deer and wild dogs have on Australian wildlife, agriculture and the environment, and how thermal imaging, night vision and trapping help conservationists track and manage them. Tom also clears up some common misunderstandings about snake behaviour.

A large part of his focus is rebuilding habitat. He explains why mature trees and natural hollows are critical for so many Australian species, and how new tools can carve artificial hollows into living trees to house birds, possums, gliders and other native species.

We also get into professional conservation work versus recreational hunting, humane control methods, and whether Australia is doing enough before the damage becomes irreversible.

  • Episode 72: #071 Brad Smeele

Former professional wakeboarder Brad Smeele was living an adrenaline fueled life, travelling the world and pushing the boundaries of his sport, until a devastating wakeboarding accident left him a C4 Quadriplegic.

A raw and open conversation about the realities that often sit behind the inspirational headlines. Exploring grief, identity, masculinity, mental health, relationships, carers, accessibility, Disability Schemes and the difficult process of accepting a life you never expected to live.

Brad also discusses his memoir, Owning It: The Ride That Changed My Life, the determination required to write his story and how he eventually began rebuilding a sense of happiness, purpose and control.

This is not simply a story about “overcoming” disability. It is a genuine conversation about confronting your darkest moments, adapting without losing yourself and taking ownership of the life that remains in front of you.

Whether you live with disability, support someone who does, or are navigating your own major life change, Brad’s perspective will challenge how you think about resilience, acceptance and what it means to truly own your life.

  • Episode 64: #063 Roman Abasy

Roman Abasy was a national Taekwondo champion and human rights advocate in Afghanistan, until the Taliban made him a target. Forced to flee, he rebuilt his life in Australia, turning exile into purpose. We explore Romans powerful journey from athlete to refugee to community leader, using sport, discipline, mental health and advocacy to uplift others, fight for justice and the right to belong.
