According to the World Health Organization (WHO), social determinants of health (SDOH) are defined as the circumstances in which humans are born, develop, live, earn, and age. They are non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. The
distribution of money, power, and resources shapes these circumstances1. These socioeconomic variables contribute to societal stratification and health disparities among persons of different social and economic classes, genders, and ethnicity.

In this episode our MSL co-hosts Shweta Kulkarni, PhD and Mary Voelmle NP, CDCES have a conversation with Shideh Majidi, MD on how the landscape and incidence of T1D diagnosis and treatment is changing. Dr. Majidi identifies key barriers and attitudes that physicians and other healthcare providers may encounter when discussing screening for type 1 diabetes, particularly among patients from under resourced communities with unique challenges that are encountered daily. We conclude the episode with concrete actions and resources our listeners can use to begin to narrow the gap on healthcare disparities within under resourced communities when approaching patients and their families on education on the incidence of T1D and the option to potentially screen for T1D.
