In already a record year for auto/pedestrian collisions, another staggering statistic was added over the course of Wednesday night/Thursday morning: Fourteen pedestrians were struck by cars between 6 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, said Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe.

One incident sent an 18-year-old man to hospital with serious injuries. The crash happenedjust before 7:30 a.m. at Islington Ave. and The Queensway. Another woman suffered life-threatening injuries in another collision on College St. near Palmerston Blvd. around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Another pedestrian who was struck by a different vehicle at the intersection was also taken to hospital, said Toronto police.

Soggy conditions in the GTA overnight were likely a factor in many of the collisions, says Toronto Police.

New regulations on the designated driver industry set to come into effect in 2017 could mean there will soon be more drunk drivers on the road in Oshawa, driving company owners warn.

The new regulations are seeing some backlash from the designated driving-companies that say many of the changes are unnecessary, and will make it harder to find drivers. However, city officials are claiming that they’re only looking to make sure the services are safe to use.

The new bylaw requires that drivers are at least 25 years old, are affiliated with a licensed designated driving broker, and have a “G” driver’s license. Drivers must also provide a Criminal Information Report with Vulnerable Sector Screening, a driver’s abstract (record), and a city-approved medical clearance letter.

As well as the previously mentioned regulations, designated drivers will also have to get explicit permission to drive a client’s car, can only drive people back who came to a site in that particular vehicle, must see a current permit and insurance before they can get behind the wheel of a client’s car.

Donna Sabo, owner of designated driving service You Drink We Drive, said to the Toronto Star, that 90 per cent of her drivers have said they won’t file for the license.

Frontier, a magazine, design studio, and ventures group, has designed what they are claiming to be the 'World's Best Tuque'. 

Creators of the tuque claim that they, "have created a tuque that we believe could be the world’s best.The result is a product conceived over 18 months of research and development. It is an exploration of Canadian history, material science, fabrication techniques, production processes, and economic systems."

It has been tested by Zamboni drivers, butchers, and backcountry hikers, but Frontier says that the hat is perfect for anyone.

Despite the almost $200 price tag, the tuque has already sold-out online, and is not taking pre-order requests for the tuque.

In the heated debate over teams with indigenous names and logos, one Mississauga team is keen on keeping theirs, and have gone about it the right way to secure a blessing from the First Nations.

The Mississauga Chiefs, who play in the Mississauga Girls Hockey League, have had the name since the team’s debut. Their logo, an arrowhead, was designed more recently after a discussion with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.

The Chiefs were among five hockey teams in Mississauga cited in a complaint to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario over team names and logos deemed “racially insensitive.”

New Credit Chief, Stacey Laforme, was involved in the discussion that saw the logo change, from a chief's head to an arrowhead, and is supportive of the team's new direction.

Halton police have laid 447 alcohol-related charges and issued 167 roadside suspensions this year, which, according to police, is a number that is much too high.

This weekend, officers will join with MADD Canada representatives visit bars and restaurants throughout Milton and Halton Hills, and will be implementing volunteer breathalyzers to bring about awareness to the weekend campaign.

Patrons will be provided with information pertaining to legislation changes that took effect October 2 that extends license suspensions, vehicle impoundment and remedial measures to those found driving while impaired by drugs.
