Message notes:
I. THE PURPOSE OF DISCIPLINE IN THE CHURCH
Proverbs 12:1
1 To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction. (NLT)
Proverbs 12:1
1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 5:1–2 & 5
1 I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother. 2 You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship. 5 Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.
1 Corinthians 5:6
6 Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?
2 Thessalonians 3:14–15
14 Take note of those who refuse to obey what we say in this letter. Stay away from them so they will be ashamed. 15 Don’t think of them as enemies, but warn them as you would a brother or sister.
Hebrews 12:6
6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”
II. FORGIVENESS & RESTORATION
2 Corinthians 2:5–8
5 I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. 6 Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. 7 Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. 8 So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him.
James 5:19–20
19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back from wandering will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
2 Corinthians 2:9–11
9 I wrote to you as I did to test you and see if you would fully comply with my instructions. 10 When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, 11 so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.
Ephesians 4:32
32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Message notes:
2 Corinthians 1:12-14:
12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. 13 For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand— 14 just as you did partially understand us—that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.
I. RELY ON THE WISDOM OF GOD
1 Corinthians 16:5-7
5 I am coming to visit you after I have been to Macedonia, for I am planning to travel through Macedonia. 6 Perhaps I will stay awhile with you, possibly all winter, and then you can send me on my way to my next destination. 7 This time I don’t want to make just a short visit and then go right on. I want to come and stay awhile, if the Lord will let me.
2 Corinthians 1:23-2:4
23 But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. 1 For I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. 2 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? 3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. 4 For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
2 Corinthians 7:8-9
8 For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. 9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
Galatians 5:16
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
II. LET YOUR YES BE YES & YOUR NO BE NO
2 Corinthians 1:15-22
Matthew 5:37
37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
1. Following through with what we say we will do
2. Grow our relationship with god through prayer and studying His word
1 Thessalonians 5:15-19
15 See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil.

Message notes:
2 Corinthians 1:3–11
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us. 8 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 10 And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. 11 And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
I. THE SOURCE OF OUR COMFORT
2 Corinthians 1:3
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.
Psalm 119:49–50
49 Remember your promise to me; it is my only hope. 50 Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.
II. WE WILL BE A COMFORT TO OTHERS
2 Corinthians 1:4
4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
2 Corinthians 1:6
6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation!
2 Corinthians 8–11
1. When everything was at it’s worst they learned to rely on God instead of themselves.
2. We have to pray for each other.
2 Corinthians 1:11
11 And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
