Your World View 6? Your View of Afterlife
Everyone in the world believes in some form of afterlife. Some religious groups believe in reincarnation. Others advocate annihilationism; they believe God will obliterate the wicked humanity and they will cease to exist. Catholics believe the imperfect Catholics will temporarily end up in purgatory for purification before entering heaven. All Bible-believing Christians affirmatively state that God will send the wicked population throughout human history to hell and they will spend their existence there eternally. Additionally, they believe all believers in Christ will end up in heaven.
Friends, do you believe in afterlife?
First of all, let’s spend some time understanding reincarnation.
Afterlife Is ReincarnationReincarnation is also called transmigration, or metempsychosis. Many Asian religions and philosophies believe in reincarnation.
Reincarnation in Condensed Explanation
In condensed explanation, reincarnation is the belief that human souls are repeatedly reborn in different bodies.
Many Asian religions advocate reincarnation. For example, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism believe in reincarnation. Interestingly, all these religions arose in India.
All these above religions believe in a common doctrine called karma. Karma is seen as all of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, which decides his or her fate in future existence.
Hypnotic regression is a form of hypnosis. By means of hypnotic regression, some people claimed to recall their past-life events.
Have you heard of the story about Bridey (Bride die )Murphy?
In 1952, Morey Bernstein, Colorado businessman and amateur hypnotist, used hypnotic regression to hypnotise a housewife by the name of Virginia Mae Reese or Virginia Tighe (Tie). In a trance, she recalled her so-called past life memories. She said she was born on December 20, 1798, in Cork, Ireland. And as an eight-year-old girl, she resided in a wooden house called The Meadows. She said she was the daughter of Duncan Murphy, a barrister. At the age of 17, she married a barrister called Sean Brian McCarthy, who taught at Queen’s University Belfast. She spoke of her death was caused by a fall in 1864. Also, she said she witnessed her own funeral and described her own tombstone.
Consequently, Morey Bernstein wrote a bestseller book called “The Search for Bridey Murphy”. Definitely, the book caused a stir back then. Popular songs were written about her. However, some reporters went to Ireland to search for the truth. Here are a few facts that debunk the myth. First of all, there is no evidence found that a wooden house called The Meadows existed. Additionally, during the 19th century, most houses in Ireland were made of brick or stone.Bridey claimed her husband was working in Queen’s University Belfast in 1805, but it was not chartered until 1845. Although Virginia Mae Reese recalled a lot of events, the alleged memories of her past life was turned out to be false.
It is common to extract a person’s past-life testimonies under hypnosis. Here are several basic characteristics that frequently emerge when people regress to “past lives” through hypnosis:
First, people frequently speak in foreign languages they do not know.
Second, the religious content of what they relate contradict the biblical teachings.
Third, people usually do not identify themselves as the persons speaking.
Some scholars studied hypnotic regression and the links between hypnosis, occult activities, and Eastern meditative trances. All in all, they stated that hypnotic regression can be demonic and potentially dangerous.
Concerning the spiritual realm or unseen world, the apostle Paul warns us, saying, “For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.” (2 Corinthians 11:4 ESV) And again he says, “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” ( 2 Corinthians 11:14 ESV)
Past Life Memories Do Not Vindicate Reincarnation
First of all, we can recall a lot of so-called memories, but all these might not be true. Hypnotists use hypnotic regression to dig out our memories, or even try to locate so-called memories from our supposed past lives, but their methodology and practice are both dangerous and faulty. Therefore, we cannot use past life memories to vindicate reincarnation.
A person might have excellent memory, but he or she might have flawed recollections at times. Most importantly, we simply cannot put our trust in hypnotic regression.
Some individuals believe experience is king; they don’t trust anyone or anything but only their experience. Oftentimes, we should put our subjective experience to test.
Virginia Tighe’s experience has proved to be questionable, thus we can safely deduce that reincarnation is open to question.
Not Much Social Improvement
If humans can truly reincarnate, we expect the societies around the world would be improving. The followers of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and pagan religions, who believe in reincarnation, form a large proportion of the world’s population. According to their belief, I guess most of them will attempt to be a better person in this present life, so that they can reincarnate to a better being in the next life. Generations after generations, the world should become a better place. However, the morality in most places is declining and the crime rates are going up around the globe. The point that I want to make is reincarnation cannot be true.
Against the Teaching of Jesus Christ
3Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. (John 9:3 ESV)
4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?
5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:4–5 ESV)
According to a Jewish traditional belief, a person could sin in the womb before birth, thus producing physical deformity.
In John 9:3, Jesus Christ clearly refuted that a person could sin in the womb before birth. In other words, there is no such thing called pre-birth sins, which affects one’s lot in this life. His teaching implies there is no such thing as karma, which decides a person’s fate in future existence.
Elsewhere, in Luke 13:4–5, Jesus emphasises that a person’s unfortunate condition of life is not necessarily because of sin (Luke 13:4–5), which is true whether referring to early life, or prenatal life.
Afterlife Is PurgatoryPurgatory is a Roman Catholic doctrine of the afterlife. Throughout the existence of the Catholic Church, this doctrine has been confirmed at the councils of Lyons (1274), Florence (1439), and Trent (1563).
Based on their teaching, not all Catholic believers are perfect, thus they have to spend time in the purgatory.
According to their belief, there are two kinds of punishment, one eternal and the other temporal. The eternal punishment is for the lost souls, but the temporal purgatory is a place to cleanse the venial sins of imperfect Catholics.
The Catholic Church believes the following few tenets:
First, the imperfect ones have to be purified before they enter heaven.
Second, this purification involves some kind of suffering.
Third, the living Catholics can contribute to this purification by means of prayers and devotions.
Fourth, purgatory is a real place.
Fifth, imperfect Catholics will stay there for a certain amount of time.
Even though the New Catholic Encyclopaedia frankly acknowledges that “the doctrine of purgatory is not explicitly stated in the Bible”, but some Catholic theologians still quoted a passage from the Apocrypha (2 Maccabees 12:42–46) to state that there are punishment and forgiveness in the next life. By the way, evangelicals and Bible-believing theologians do not regard the Apocrypha as part of the Canon of the Bible. Moreover, the Roman Catholic Church took a few passages and interpreted in such a way so that they could support the notion of purgatory (Matthew 12:32; 1 Corinthians 3:15; Matthew 5:26).
Additionally, according to the Catholic tradition, purgatory is a well established teaching.
Bible-believing Christians believe in sola Scriptura, meaning that Scripture alone is the primary and absolute source of authority, for all doctrine and practice. The implications of sola Scriptura are as follows:
First, the Bible is God’s direct revelation.
Second, the Old Testament and the New Testament are God’s sufficient and final written authority.
Third, the Bible is clearly expressed.
Christ Has Made Christians Perfect
According to evangelical Christians, purgatory is a false doctrine. First of all, the idea of purgatory denies the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ’s atoning death.
On the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The Lord declared His entire work of redemption had been brought to completion.
The apostle Paul gave us insight about the redemption of Jesus Christ, in which he says, “He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21 HCSB) Sinners are deserved to be punished but Jesus Christ took all the punishment on Himself, so that those who confess faith in Him are made right with God.
The author of Hebrews says, “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:14 ESV) Because of the once and for all offering of Jesus on the cross, believers have a perfect standing before God.
The logic is simple: Since Jesus Christ has completed the work of salvation by His sacrificial death on the cross, all believers are made whole, and they do not have to go through purification in the afterlife.
If you searched the entire Bible, you cannot find the place or the idea called purgatory. Purgatory is purely a human or Catholic invention.
What’s wrong with believing in purgatory?
I can tell you a few problems. First, like I mentioned earlier, Jesus Christ has already accomplished the work of redemption, and anyone who places one’s faith in Him will be saved eternally. If people believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, but they still believe they have to go through some kind of purification before they can go to heaven, is an insult to the Redeemer. Second, if a person died as an infidel, his or her eternal destiny is sealed, and so are the fate of so-called Christians. There is no second chance in the afterlife. Purgatory gives Catholics false hope that they will have a second chance to improve themselves in the afterlife. Lastly, since purgatory does not exist, so why should a person place his or her faith in it?
Afterlife Is AnnihilationVarious religious groups believe there is no eternal punishment for the wicked in the afterlife. In a simple sentence, some people state that the wicked will not suffer an everlasting conscious hell. This kind of theory is called annihilation.
Seventh-Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses are annihilationists. Strangely, some renowned Christian scholars believe in annihilationism as well.
Based on human reasoning, a Christian scholar does not consider a God of love will torture people forever for sins done in the context of a finite life. A pastor stated that God will grant the righteous eternal life while He will grant the unbelievers eternal death. However, he reckons hell is annihilation. Astonishingly, the alternative interpretation of hell as annihilation seems to have prevailed even among many of the more conservative theologians.
Based on their own way of interpreting passages about eternal death and punishment, some Bible scholars deny hell as a place of eternal punishment but uphold the ungodly people will cease to exist instead.
God’s Justice Demands Eternal Punishment
Throughout human existence, evil men and women committed all sorts of heinous and unthinkable crimes. War criminals committed genocides. As soldiers had to follow the orders of their dictatorial and bloodthirsty leaders, countless innocent children and civilians were slaughtered and untold once-cozy homes were destroyed. Sexual predators and serial rapists secretly planned and unashamedly abused innocent women sexually and emotionally. Sons and daughters killed their parents in cold blood. The list goes on and on.
The author of Hebrews said, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!” (Hebrews 10:31 HCSB) Understandably, no normal person likes to be punished by any human authority, let alone by God. However, God’s justice demands and requires that sin be punished.
God’s Sovereignty Demands Eternal Punishment
Humans can reason out that God will not punish the wicked and non-believers forever, but this is only a wishful thinking. As God is the Creator and the Ruler of all things, He has the right to do what pleases Him.
God is the Sovereign One over His creation; He has the right to bring eternal punishment on the wicked and non-believing ones, and it is not up to us to say ‘No’.
The Everlasting Human Soul
In the Old Testament, humans are said to possess an animating spiritual part and likewise in the New Testament. One theological school states that humans have three major components—body, soul, and spirit. Another school states that humans are made up of only two parts—body, soul or spirit.
Most probably, human beings get their bodies and souls from their parents. According to my understanding, soul and spirit are common terms used to describe the non-material nature of humans. Additionally, there are a number of other terms that describe human’s non-physical nature.
One of the most common terms that we come across in the Bible is heart. The heart describes the intellectual (Matthew 15:19–20) as well as the volitional part of humankind (Romans10:9–10; Hebrews 4:7). The second expression is conscience (1 Timothy 4:2; Romans 2:15; 1 Corinthians 8:7, 10, 12). Another name is mind. Non-believers have a depraved mind (Romans 1:28), which is blinded by Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4). As believers in Christ, with a renewed mind (Romans 12:2), they have the ability to love God (Matt. 22:37). The last appellation is will. Non-believers have a will that desires to follow the dictates of the flesh (Ephesians 2:2–3), whereas Christians have the ability to desire to do God’s will (Romans 6:12–13).
In simple terms, all humans have a physical body and a spirit or soul. We can call the human spirit or human soul the inner human being (2 Corinthians 4:16–18). The non-physical component of human beings will last forever after their bodies experience death.
As human spirits or souls last forever, therefore the theory of annihilation is illogical.
Afterlife Is HellBible-believing Christians believe hell is a real place which awaits the wicked and non-believing individuals throughout human history.
When Christians touch on the topic of hell with non-believers, one of the most common responses is that they think hell is cruel and barbarous. Some non-believers said that Christians threaten people with eternal punishment is inhumane.
In spite of the fact that the word hell is an Anglo-Saxon word, possibly of Norse origins, hell is not a pagan idea but a real place mentioned in the Bible.
There are several names in the Old Testament and the New Testament used to describe hell or eternal punishment.
If you study the four Gospels, you might be surprised that Jesus Christ spoke of hell on many occasions. It seems He had more to say about hell than He did about heaven (Matthew 5:29–30; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 11:23; Matthew 13:40–41; Matthew 13:49–50; Matthew 22:13; Matthew 23:15, 33; Matthew 25:41; Mark 9:43–48; Luke 12:5; Luke 16:19–31).
New Testament Authors Talked about Hell
Not only Jesus often spoke of hell, the other authors of the New Testament spoke about this real place as well. The apostle Paul indicated hell is the place of eternal destruction for the wicked (2 Thessalonians 1:9). The apostle John speaks of those who oppose Jesus Christ will suffer eternally in a lake of fire (Rev 20:7–15).
John 3:16 speaks of eternal life as well as eternal death. Either one rejects or accepts Jesus as one’s Saviour, there is no other choice, or there is no middle ground. In a nutshell, there is no second chance after death, or personal annihilation of the ungodly at some stage.
God’s Holiness Demands Justice
As God is most holy, thus His holiness demands justice. Dr Warren Wiersbe reminds us that God’s holiness demands justice, but His love manifests mercy. In his own words, he says, “God is holy and must punish sin; but God is loving and desires to save sinners. If everybody is saved, it would deny His holiness; but if everybody is lost, it would deny His love.”
God’s Justice Demands Eternal Punishment
If something seems unfair to children, they would often shout at the top of their lungs, saying, “Not fair!” Children crave for fairness. Similarly, adults long to see justice done in this world. As human beings, we want to live in a world of fairness and justice. Law and order is a system that pursues justice and fairness. We expect burglars, murderers, sexual offenders and all criminals be caught, charged and punished according to the law.
One important fact is that God is not cruel but just (Romans 2). He is holy that He cannot even shut His eyes to sin (Habakkuk 1:13). The existence of hell for the wicked is necessary to maintain God’s justice.
God’s Sovereignty Demands Eternal Punishment
When we see the wicked flourish, we become despondent. Deep inside of us, we cry out for justice, and at the same time, we think evil has triumphed over goodness.
Although wickedness is prevalent, God will put it to an end one day, and will send all the evil people to hell. God is the ultimate Victor over evil (1 Corinthians 15:24–28; Revelation 20–22).
God is sovereign. And because of that, He has every right to punish sinners.
Human Depravity Demands Eternal Punishment
Definitely, super football fans want to attend a World Cup final match; similarly, loyal fans of a pop star dream to attend their idol’s concert. But, they need the official tickets. In a civilised world, they simply cannot barge their way to these events. By the same token, godless and non-believers cannot force their way to heaven. As for Christians, since they have place their faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour, He is their official ticket to heaven.
Heaven is a holy place and God’s presence. Moreover, it is the eternal home reserved especially for God’s children, and for sure godless and non-believers have no place in there.
The apostle Paul says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23 HCSB) Total depravity of humankind demands damnation and eternal punishment. Hell is reserved for the lost souls throughout human history.
Everlasting and Extreme Punishment
Sadly and horrifyingly, hell is a reality. The suffering there is everlasting. The pain there is extreme, and it is beyond words to describe.
Drawing on Isaiah 66:24, Jesus Christ clearly speaks of hell as the place where the worm never dies and the fire is never extinguished (Mark 9:48). In Matthew 25:46, He states that the punishment is forever.
Many anti-Christian and anti-Bible people abhor the message of hell. They think the Bible authors use hell to threaten their audience, so that they would to Christianity. Of course, it is a false accusation.
For one of the many good reasons, Jesus Christ and the other Bible authors spoke of hell was because they wanted to warn people to stay away from hell. It is like educating children about fire safety. As parents, we should teach children about the dangers of fire and the importance of not playing with fire-starting materials. We do not want to threaten them. We simply love our own kids and do not want to see them get hurt.
Afterlife Is Heaven16“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 HCSB)
John spoke of God’s gift for humanity. God gave humanity His Son and sent Him to die for our sins on the cross. By means of a faith-decision, believers will attain eternal life. People who place their faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour will escape the second death (Revelation 2:11; 20:6), that is, the eternal punishment in the lake of fire.
The Afterlife of Christians
The Bible plainly reveals heaven to humanity. It speaks of the afterlife of Christians. Believers in Jesus Christ will enjoy eternal life in their heavenly home. Heaven is a place full of God’s love, joy and peace.
As humans, we would love to be with our loved ones forever. As Christians, for sure we long to be with our loving God and our loved ones forever.
Who does not want to be joyous all the time? In heaven, our hearts will be filled of joy all the time.
Normal people crave for peace, and that is why numerous people pray for it on New Year’s Eve. In the future, Christians do not have to pray for peace in heaven anymore, because the condition of peace is there forever.
God is the source of love, joy and peace. Isn’t it wonderful that Christians can enjoy love, joy and peace in heaven forever?
How can we go to heaven? It is easier than you think. All you need is to truly and wholly commit yourself to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
Let me give you an example. An elderly couple’s wish finally came true. They purchased a penthouse apartment so that they could enjoy their golden years.
Unfortunately, the husband had a bad fall at home. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on the way there. All of a sudden, the always jubilant woman became lonely and moanful.
On a cold and windy day, her neighbours caused a fire while cooking. The raging fire was spreading quickly and uncontrollably. The darof smoke triggered the smoke detectors in her neighbours’ apartment. Within a minute or so, the blaring sirens of the fire engines were heard from afar. Although the old widow knew she had to immediately leave her apartment and head towards the emergency exit and walk down the stairs, she was too feeble to do so. All she could do was to pray. Without even finishing the last sentence of her prayer, she heard a loud bang on the door. A firefighter came to her rescue. He told her not to panic and go open the door for him. Even though she could only walk slowly, she finally reached the entrance and opened the door for the firefighter. The first thing the firefighter said was “Stay calm. Let me piggyback you out of here.”
All human beings have sinned but do not have the ability to save themselves. All of us are engulfed by our sins. Like the old widow, all we can do is wait and die. However, Jesus Christ has come to our rescue. All we need to do is to open our door for Jesus Christso that He can save us. Like the firefighter, Jesus Christ, the Saviour of all humankind, will piggyback us and carry us to safety.
Dear friends, may I encourage you to commit your life to Jesus Christ now.
Dear Christians, life is very short. Let’s introduce Jesus Christ to our non-believing friends, relatives and family members, so that they can have eternal life like us.
