Kevin and Tenisha Mix It Up

This season is all about being transparent and you cannot really get more real than this. We are elated to have Alex and Ahkila Mix It Up with us to discuss something that is very personal for them. Growing up we always paint a picture of what our life will look like in the future. What type of job we’ll have, car we’ll drive, house, dog, wife, counter tops and of course KIDS! We especially start to have these thoughts and conversations once we find that special someone. On this episode you’ll get to hear from a husband and wife who had it all figured out until their master plan started to have a few glitches. Alex and Ahkila share their journey with infertility that eventually pushed them in the direction of adopting our AMAZING nephew Jaxon! We hope you enjoy their story.

We sit down with Trek and Shawni to basically pick apart their entire relationship, which happens to be most of their lives. Devin (Trek) and Shanwtell have been close friends of ours for many years but it is a rare occasion that the 4 of us sit down together to talk about life's ups and downs. Anyone who knows, knows that Devin unapologetically loves Devin especially in his younger years and we were really interested on how that carried over into parenting and marriage. There had to be a shift from selfish to selfless and the two of them do an amazing job at illustrating that exact shift.

As some of you may know @TrekManifest is also an open book on social media. He shows it all. As followers you can see the two of them working with their boys on reading, math and all the other things that school kids do. Both boys have Individualized Education Programs (IEP's) to help them goal set their learning. They do an amazing job of diving into the fears, guilt and ultimately joys that working with their boys IEP's have brought along.

A major contributing factor for us starting this podcast was that we have the opportunity to explore race and share experiences that we have as a mixed race family. This episode takes a deep dive in what it was like for our good friend Cameron to grow up biracial in one of the most affluent suburbs in Ohio. Cam is currently a 5th year student at The Ohio State University so he isn't too far removed from his memories prior to college.

Cam shares that kids in his complex were often described as "river rats" or kids from "the other side of the river," as they didn't live on the more "well off (white)" side of the city. We take a look back on his earliest memories of microaggressions and racism as well as the scars that he will never be able to get rid of.

We could dive so much deeper in this episode but we try to stay on the topic. We believe that there is a lot we can learn from Cams story and we hope that this provides our listeners with something positive! Affirmation or information with a push for action. We want and need to make a difference in the communities we live, join in on the convo with us!

This is a very special episode because we have two very special people joining us. Two of our best friends, Alisha Martin and Ernest Paige (Bern)! They also happen to currently be single and on the dating scene during this crazy time of life. We pick their brain on what it's like to date in 2020, internal and external pressures put on singles to be in relationships, God parenting, the role of social media and more.

Quite frankly we have never known what its like to be single as a grown up so we brought in the experts...hmm that doesn't really sound like a compliment but they know we love them, they just been out here for awhile so they have some great insight to share with the world!

Welcome to Season 2 of Kevin and Tenisha Mix It Up. We are excited to kick this season off by diving into what this year has been like for us as a family. We kept pushing off Season 2 of this podcast until things in 2020 "got better," but that just doesn't seem like a thing. In this episode we give a rundown of our year as a married couple with kids stuck in the house and what that's been like, we discuss some new endeavors that both of us are working towards and how this season of life has affected our family.
