This opinion piece is in response to a local school board election. All across America, rural communities are increasingly at odds with their public school administrations. Those administrations promote the more liberal leftist, sometimes radical, perspectives fostered by colleges and universities, whereas the worldview of rural communities is more traditional and conservative. The challenge for rural communities is to accept the benefits of public education while restraining the attempts to indoctrinate young people. What should be the role of citizens and school board members? Do we love our schools or do we act as gatekeepers to protect our children?
