A mayor’s race in New York City has seized national attention as a referendum on the future of the Democratic Party and the path forward for the nation’s largest city. It’s taking place in the hometown of a Republican president who has indicated he is following closely and may respond punitively if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani prevails.In New Jersey and Virginia two blue states that have grown increasingly purple party leaders are watching the races for governor closely, and major figures, from former President Barack Obama and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to President Donald Trump, are chiming in.
