  • The Family Room - A Life Restored
Guest: Michael Supak - former drug addict who has recovered his life as a husband, father, and engineer

Michael Supak grew up outside Chicago with his parents and older sister. Shy and withdrawn as a child, he discovered running and found his identity as an athlete. Michael never partied, preferring the disciplined life necessary to land a college scholarship competing in Division One track.

It was the summer before college when Michael took his first drink. He’d always believed he wasn’t good enough, and alcohol took away his insecurities. Finally able to gain confidence, Michael drank until he blacked out and began partying to the point where he couldn’t graduate on time. This behavior caused him to lose his NCAA standing, and his athletic career abruptly ended. With his identity stripped, Michael plummeted into full-blown alcohol and drug addiction, spending the next 20 years in and out of jail and rehab facilities and becoming ashamed to the point of suicide.

It was Michael's sister who discovered the faith-based recovery program called Cenacolo, founded by an Italian nun in 1983. There are now 72 houses for men and women in 20 countries. Cenacolo teaches character by challenging our perspectives. Michael shares how the community Cenacolo helped him refocus his priorities by trusting in God, giving him the life he always dreamed of.

Guest biography: Michael Supak was raised Catholic, although faith wasn’t a big part of their lives. His dad was a union electrician, his mom was a nurse, and his sister, Amy, was four years older than Michael. He describes his parents as loving and supportive of everything he and his sister wanted to do. Michael attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL, graduating with a degree in Engineering. His longtime girlfriend, Melissa, believed in him long enough to support him in his recovery, and they are now married with four teenagers. A devout Catholic, Michael devotes his time giving hope to others lost in a world of darkness.

  • Josh McPherson - When Your Best Efforts Still Aren’t Enough

In this conclusion to the book of Nehemiah, Pastor Josh McPherson teaches from Nehemiah 13 about the danger of spiritual drift and the importance of finishing well. Although Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls and led the people through remarkable reform, compromise quickly returned when constant care and courageous leadership disappeared. The book ends with Nehemiah pleading, “Remember me with favor, my God”—a whispered prayer that foreshadows the better Reformer.
