Skyrocketing COVID-19 cases hobbled U.S. airline staff on Monday, causing hundreds of flight cancellations, and prompted the country's top infectious disease expert to suggest the government consider a vaccine mandate for domestic air travel.

Should booster shots be required? A booster shot is already becoming a fact of life at some places, however. More than 75 universities have required boosters for students returning to campus in the winter, according to data compiled by the Chronicle of Higher Education. New Mexico mandated the extra dose for some state employees.

Reality Winner, the former Air Force linguist and intelligence contractor who pleaded guilty in June to leaking a top-secret government report on Russian hacking, was sentenced on Thursday to five years and three months in federal prison.

Ms. Winner, 26, is the first person to be sentenced under the Espionage Act since President Trump took office. Prosecutors said her sentence was the longest ever imposed in federal court for an unauthorized release of government information to the media.

She was arrested in June 2017 and was held for more than a year while prosecutors built a case. She pleaded guilty in June 2018 to one felony count of unauthorized transmission of national defense information, for giving a classified report about Russian interference in the 2016 election to a news outlet.

Prosecutors said on Thursday that Ms. Winner’s actions merited a stiff sentence.

“Winner’s purposeful violation put our nation’s security at risk,” United States Attorney Bobby L. Christine told reporters after the sentencing in federal court in Augusta, Ga. He said the report she leaked revealed sources and methods of intelligence gathering, and its disclosure “caused exceptionally grave damage to U.S. national security.”

COVID CASES SKYROCKETING, FLIGHTS CANCELLED, AND MAYBE THE WORST IS YET TO COME

COVID cases are skyrocketing as we head into 2022 and the impacts are growing. Thousands of flights have been cancelled since Christmas Eve with 900 more today (so far). Airlines and pilots unions say workers are being infected with Omicron and have to call out sick. The NHL has postponed every game again tonight. Over 200,000 new cases of COVID are being reported every single day. And now troubling data coming in showing childhood hospitalizations from COVID jumping and hospitalizations rising in places like Louisiana and New York, where the number of children hospitalized in the city has seen a five-fold increase since the week of December 5th. The CDC is warning health care workers to prepare for a major surge in infections that could go even higher. The real impact of the current surge isn’t yet known since new data hasn’t been reported in a few days because of Christmas.
