Silence on Set

Kheris Rogers author, CEO of a clothing line with an anti-bullying mission is just getting started

Listen Later

Kheris Rogers is one of the fiercest people you will ever meet. She has begun setting goals for herself at a young age and has accomplished them all due to her determination, positive attitude, and hard work. Rogers is a 16-year-old CEO of apparel brand Flexin in My Complexion https://flexininmycomplexion.com/. Her message on anti-bullying and for black girls and women to “Flex” and LOVE their skin is drawing huge attention and support from some of our favorite, beautiful, and influential melanated icons, including Lupita Nyong’o, Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys, and more. Many are starting to proudly “rock” the Flexin in my Complexion gear. Kheris is so thrilled and grateful. A native of Los Angeles, she launched the line after being bullied at age 10 for her beautiful, dark-melanated skin tone. She wrote a book called Shine Bright (published by Harper Collins) that is available anywhere books are sold to help other kids that look like her know that that is what makes them unique -- that is their light, their superpower. Rogers is doing so many projects at once that it would take me an entire book to write them all down, but speaking to her, I learned she is way beyond her years, has a good family, is grounded, and is not stopping any time soon. Rogers dreams of having a million in the bank before the year is over, and I think she might make that happen and more.

Bio:

Six years ago, Kheris Rogers came to national prominence when she turned the tables on bullies at school who made fun of her dark skin by launching her apparel brand Flexin' In My Complexion.™ Overnight, Kheris and her streetwear line, which champions self-love, self-worth and representation for Black girls and women, became a viral sensation! Iconic celebrities and pop culture figures including Lupita Nyong’o, Alicia Keys, Whoopi Goldberg and Taraji P. Henson became some of the young fashionista's earliest supporters. Represented by LA Models, Kheris made history as one of the youngest designers to ever debut her line at NY Fashion Week.

At the still tender age of 16, the Los Angeles native and fashion CEO has added 'author' and 'humanitarian' to her growing list of attributions. Kheris hopes her children's book “Shine Bright” encourages kids -- especially from the Black community -- to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate themselves even when others don't. Luana Kay Horry, Senior Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books, calls Kheris "an inspiration to anyone who has ever been bullied for the things that make them beautiful," and noted that her story will "encourage all children to shine as bright as they can and on their own terms.”
