This evening we open our exploration of the High Holidays with insights from Dovid Campbell and Samuel Fleischacker on the validity of questioning and investigating, rather than certainty of faith. Then we probe two Mitzvot, Bikkurim (offering first fruits) and Maaser (tithing) for the distinction in how they are celebrated (or not), and Rashi's teaching on the essential requirement of joy in order to properly fulfill these and all commandments.

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
