  • Ep535: Late Screening: Alternative Facts
Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast and Cole Rush of The Quill to Live reverse course with a "Late Screening" look at Christopher Nolan's Memento! Hard to believe it's been twenty years, but the Dark Knight and Dunkirk director's first widely acclaimed feature rode a wave of time-tangled, twist-ending thrillers to become one of the most memorable movies about memory loss ever. The guys break down the film in spoilerific detail and lament the lack of similarly gripping, intelligent drama in the present-day multiplex. Also, Ian recommends Sujewa Ekanayake's recent interview with former Newmarket Films creative director, John Crye, who helped bring Memento to the big screen!Episode 535 still doesn't know who the f%!@k Dodd is!Show Guide:Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14Intro: 0:14 - 3:15Memento Trailer: 3:15 - 5:14Memento Discussion: 5:14 - 52:21Outro Music: 52:21 - 52:52Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!Click to Listen!

  • Ep534: The Dukes of ARKANSAS
Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast travels down South with Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson for a deep-fried look at Arkansas! Co-writer/director/star Clark Duke's off-beat thriller finds two young drug runners plotting to clean up a bloody mess before the shadowy head of their operation catches on.The film evokes Elmore Leonard and The Coen Brothers, but has its own unique voice that alternates between warbly and refreshingly operatic. Ian and Don talk the good, the bad, and the nitpicky--and take a couple of fun detours to praise Vince Vaughn's film-stealing performance.Arkansas is now available On Demand and via good ol' fashioned physical media--and you'll definitely want to watch it before listening to this spoilerific episode!Episode 534 knows where the bodies are buried!Show Guide:Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14Intro: 0:14 - 1:53Arkansas Trailer: 1:53 - 4:16Arkansas Discussion: 4:16 - 48:10Outro Music: 48:10 - 48:25Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!Click to Listen!

  • Ep533: Employment History
Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast gets topical with the new drama, Working Man, which hits VOD tomorrow. Recently, Ian spoke with writer/director Robert Jury and star Peter Gerety about their film, which centers on a Midwest machinist who refuses to stop working, even after the factory he's worked at for decades shuts its doors. The high concept makes way for a much deeper and heartfelt look at loss and mental illness, and the ways in which jobs shape our lives. Though Ian's conversations with Bob and Peter touch on the film itself, both dovetail into the effects that the current pandemic lockdowns are having on people's well-being and purpose--a degree of relevance that neither subject had expected the film to take on when starting the project.*Also, Ian returns to the Spoiler Room podcast and talks with Mark "The Movie Man" Krawczyk about Emile Ardolino's bizarre 1989 reincarnation comedy, Chances Are! Episode 533 says 9-5 is a part-time job!Show Guide:Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14Intro: 0:14 - 5:08Working Man Trailer: 5:08 - 7:33Robert Jury Interview: 7:33 - 24:15Transition Music: 24:15 - 24:44Peter Gerety Interview: 24:44 - 51:00Outro Music: 51:00 - 51:26*FYI, here's a link to the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center, the organization Peter mentions late in his interview.Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!Click to Listen!

  • Ep532: INSIDE THE RAIN w/ Eric Roberts and Aaron Fisher
Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast presents a long-overdue interview with the people behind the indie drama, Inside the Rain! The film, which centers on a college student who decides to make a movie to prove his innocence against allegations of inappropriate behavior, debuted on Amazon Prime early last month. In March, Ian spoke with  actor Eric Roberts (yes, that Eric Roberts) and writer/director/star Aaron Fisher about what it took to make this deeply personal dramedy about high-functioning mental illness. Each conversation has its own unique flavor. Ian talks about navigating them, and also explains the "rain" delay.Episode 532 will let you stand under its umbrella...ella...ella!Show Guide:Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14Intro: 0:14 - 4:36Inside the Rain Trailer: 4:36 - 6:48Eric Roberts Interview: 6:48 - 16:35Transition Music: 16:35 - 17:09Aaron Fisher Interview: 17:09 - 34:49Outro Music: 34:49 - 35:05Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!Click to Listen!

  • Ep491: Glubthumping
Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie sink to new depths with a look at Underwater! Actually, the guys liked a lot about William Eubank's deep-ocean thriller, which centers on a drilling team fighting the clock and monsters following a crippling disaster. Up for discussion are the numerous ways the movie succumbs to and transcends the films that influenced it; why sometimes the male gaze is just what the doctor ordered; and the need for TJ Miller to either grow as an actor or throw in the soaking wet towel. Also, Ian cuts past the superficiality of Reality Queen to discover why the new limited-release mockumentary doesn't quite work. Episode 491 is turning blue! • Ep490: The Slowdown: My Dinner with BOONMEE
Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast and writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake return with another edition of "The Slowdown"! In addition to catching up on Sujewa's indie feature, Slow Romance, and Ian's "Top 19 Films of 2019", the guys wade through the thick metaphorical jungles of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's slow cinema head-trip, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. This fantastical tale centers on a Thai tamarind farmer who shares his final days with friends, ghosts, and living memories--creating a meditative tapestry punctuated by moments so jaw-droppingly weird you'll be convinced you're having an out-of-body experience. Also, Ian shares his latest appearance on the 90 Under 90 podcast, in which he gets in a Fab Four frenzy with Dan and Jeremy Eden over A Hard Day's Night! Episode 490 will never look at catfish the same way again! • Ep489: Sled Hammer
Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie enter new territory with a look at Disney Plus' family-friendly historical adventure Togo. Willem Dafoe and Julianne Nicholson star in the real-life story of a musher living in 1920s Alaska, who must brave a brutal storm with his faithful sled dogs in order to bring diphtheria medicine back to his ailing town. David liked the film; Ian didn't. But far from being a combative episode, this conversation digs into the ways in which a movie can be well-crafted and enjoyable to most people--while failing to connect with someone who really wants to love it. Episode 489 gets all mushy! Show Guide: Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14 Intro: 0:14 - 2:21 Togo Trailer: 2:21 - 4:38 Togo Discussion: 4:38 - 38:37 Outro Music: 38:37 - 38:53 Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!
