The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces, also known as The Twelve Dancing Princesses, is a Grimm fairy tale about a king puzzled by a mystery: every morning, his twelve daughters’ shoes are found worn through—as if they had been dancing all night. Yet their bedroom is locked, and no one knows how they escape.
The king promises that whoever can solve the mystery in three nights will marry one of his daughters. Many try and fail. Then, a clever soldier, helped by an old woman, receives a magical invisibility cloak. He uses it to secretly follow the princesses and discovers they slip through a hidden passage to a magical underground kingdom, where they dance all night with twelve enchanted princes.
After three nights, the soldier reveals the truth. The spell is broken, the underground world vanishes, and the soldier marries the eldest princess. The tale celebrates cleverness, courage, and the rewards of seeing through enchantment to the truth.
