In 1979 Walter Murch was talking to some executives at Disney about making what amounted to a Wizard of Oz "sequel" but more in keeping with the spirit of L. Frank Baum the author of the book series. What came about was the darkest American fairy tale in keeping with the spirit of the author but failed at the box office in a big way.
