A Public Affair

Kids & Social Media

Listen Later

When Carousel’s daughter said “Everyone is on Instagram but me,” Carousel thought, “Certainly she’s exaggerating.”  She wasn’t. Within an hour she was connected with 100 of her classmates. This led Carousel to realized how vital apps like Instagram have be come to her kids social circles. Expanding on this moment and the experience of parenting kids who are on social media, we are talking about youth on social media.
First, we talk with Representative David Steffen who has authored a new bill that would put a curfew on the hours minors can use social media. This would be the default, though parents can override the curfew. The bill is modeled after a new Utah law that will go into effect this summer.
Then, Dr. Megan Moreno, co-medical director of American Academy of Pediatrics Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental health, joins us to talk about research on youth and social media and to give current tools for parents.
