Killer In The Family

In June 2020, at the height of the COVID lockdown, 40 year old Aneta Zdun and her 18 year old daughter Nikoleta were killed by husband and father Marcin Zdun. Their 6 and 5 year old daughters witnessed the horrific murders and were screaming for their mother and sister.

A man with a history of violence, control and abuse, he killed Aneta and Nikoleta just six weeks after Aneta had kicked him out of their home to escape the abuse.

Even though the murders were witnessed by two young children and a number of members of the public, Zdun still tried to minimise what he had done. He was found guilty of their murder though and sentenced to life.

This is the story of the Zdun Family.

In 2014, 66 year old Christine Lee and her 40 year old daughter Lucy Lee were shot and killed by Christine’s partner 82 year old John Lowe.

Lowe was a violent and controlling man who had a history of criminality and yet was allowed to retain his firearms licence and his shotguns. He killed Christine as she was planning to leave him and maintained the murders were an accident. This is a case with a lot of agency engagement and red flags and clear systemic failings towards the victims.

This is the story of Christine and Lucy Lee.

In September 2021 in Derbyshire, 35 year old Terri Harris was killed by her partner Damien Bendall – she was pregnant at the time. He also killed her two children – 13 year old John Paul and 11 year old Lacey and Lacey’s friend Connie Gent. He also raped Lacey.

Bendall pled guilty and received a whole-life sentence. He was on probation at the time of the murders and an independent review found many missed opportunities to properly assess the risk he posed to the family.

This is the story of Terri, John Paul, Lacey and Connie.

In 1805 in Lincolnshire a heavily pregnant Mary Kirkham was found dead – she had been killed.

A local Navvy called Tom Otter was soon arrested for her murder. They had married just the day before – unbeknownst to Mary it was Tom Otter’s second marriage and he already had another wife and child as well.

Thought to have killed her to escape the responsibility of a family, Otter was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. He was the last man in Lincolnshire to be gibbeted and his name is carried across the area. Mary Kirkham was buried in an unmarked grave.

This is the story of Mary Kirkham.

In July 2003, 39 year old Joanie Harper, her mother 70 year old Earnestine Harper and her three children 4 year old Marques, 2 year old Lyndsey and 6 week old Marshall were brutally killed by husband, son in law and father Vincent Brothers.

A seemingly well respected school Vice Principal, Brothers had a history of violence and abuse and carried out a planned and calculated murder of his whole family – while believing that his airtight alibi would remove him from suspicion.

Through forensics, entomology and investigating the mileage of a rental car, Brothers was arrested and tried for the murders of his family and is currently sitting on death row in California.

This is the story of the Harper Family.
