Each year, the Northwest Christian School Board enjoys a session with the entire Northwest Christian secondary Bible team.  The open-ended conversation includes highs and lows, strengths and weaknesses, and a focus on whether or not the program is truly impacting students and helping them to develop a Biblical worldview.

Following the January 2026 version of the conversation, we recognized that we wanted to take it further and, in the spirit of transparency and authenticity, open it up for all to hear and participate.  As a result, over the next several weeks and months, Kingdom Culture Conversations is going to take the time to walk through these conversations with each of the school's secondary Bible teachers.

Today, we continue this journey with Tyler Collins, Northwest Christian's sophomore Bible teacher.  Having served within Northwest Christian for nearly two decades, and having overseen the Bible department for nearly half that time, Tyler is poised to offer a powerful perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of NCS Bible curriculum and spiritual formation strategies.

Many school advocate for "service learning", an educational concept defined as "an educational approach that combines meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities."  But, at Northwest Christian, the bones of this concept are restructured, repurposed, and retitled "Missions Learning".

So, pragmatically, what is the difference between service learning and Northwest Christian's "Missions Learning"?

Tomorrow, March 4, is one of the 2025/2026 school year's "High School Serve Days" - a day completely dedicated to Missions Learning.  As such, we thought it would be interesting to explore this question, as well as several others, with Tyler Collins, the high school teacher/leader that drives the program forward.

What is the difference between service learning and Missions Learning?  What happens when over 500 high schoolers set out to work within the community?  Where do they go and what do they do?  And, perhaps most importantly, is it having the desire impact in the lives of students?

As a director within Missions Door, Bob Lehman has a span of ministerial impact that is VERY impressive.  As the founding pastor of two unique church plants, his commitment to the community of the local church is BEYOND impressive.

But, what spurs incredulity is that he has the passion and drive to maintain both.

Where was that passion born?  At what point did he realize that God's call on his life would be so vast and encompassing?  What steps did he take and what spiritual disciplines does he maintain so that he remains attentive to God's lead as he leads?  These questions are what drive an extremely insightful Kingdom Culture Conversation with a man that many call a "pastor's pastor".

The U.S. Department of State describes the problem in jarringly acute terms:  "The Government of Cambodia does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so.  Despite the lack of significant efforts, the government took some steps to address trafficking, including opening a victim support center, cooperating with foreign governments on anti-trafficking investigations, and launching an online trafficking victim identification training course available to government officials. However, corruption and official complicity – including by high-level senior government officials – in trafficking crimes remained widespread and endemic during the reporting period; this included the exploitation of tens of thousands of victims in forced criminality in online scam operations in Cambodia. Officials actively impeded countervailing efforts, including reportedly undermining anti-trafficking law enforcement and victim protection efforts and dispelling reported accusations through minimization and denial in public messaging of the prevalence and severity of online scam operations, including reports of government complicity."

It's for this reason that "Steven's" last name is redacted.  A young man, faithful to being attentive to God's voice, standing in the gap and, in spite of the threat of harm and the potential dangers, working to rescue children from within a culture entrenched in forced slavery and sex trafficking...

As this episode hits, we are just 48 hours from the premiere of Northwest Christian's 12th annual NXNW student film, "10:17"!  This Friday, February 20th, at Harkins Norterra, the lights will drop and the film will roll.

10:17 is being described as "riveting" and the early word from folks that have seen it is that this will be Northwest Christian's best film to date.  Is the hype real?

For over a decade, Northwest Christian School has done something few, if any, high schools have done:  create a film starring students.  Today, our Kingdom Culture Conversation with Chris Zimmerman, the writer and director behind 10:17, clues us in on what goes into make a film with students.  We'll learn about story development, writing, auditioning, filming, acting, editing, and scoring.

For the past three years, Northwest Christian School has helped spearhead a "pilot" program within the Colson Center for Christian Worldview:  the Colson Educators Academic Affiliation.  Every teacher has enjoyed training in Biblical worldview and nearly forty teachers, administrators, and staff have opted into a yearlong, deep-dive into Christian worldview through the Colson Fellows program.

It all sounds very impressive.  But what, specifically, does it mean?

To say that Brooke Brown is an inspiration is an understatement.

As she spoke to Northwest Christian secondary students in two chapels during January 2026, the room was completely quiet.  "Speaking" from a wheelchair, using a voice augmentation app, Brooke held two different 600+ audiences completely spellbound.

Her message was profoundly simple and two-fold.  First, when you first meet a person, like her, who is atypically abled, assume competence.  Second, all of us typically or atypically abled, are Imago Dei -- carefully crafted by a Creator, in His image and likeness.

That would be the advice offered by Northwest Christian superintendent and Kingdom Culture Conversation co-host Geoff Brown.

Why?

Because this particular episode of Kingdom Culture Conversations will blow your mind.  Or, if not your mind, it just might blow up the convenient buffer that many Evangelical Christians have placed between themselves and the spiritual realm.  Although Scripture is filled with references to and stories about angels, demons, and a vast spiritual cosmology, for most of us, that reality remains unconsidered and unexplored.

And, in some (perhaps most?) instances, for good reason.  We abide within a culture infatuated with demonic darkness in horror movies, music, television, books, podcasts, and more.  At times, it seems as though the only safe harbor to sail within the spiritual realm is truly anchored within the word of God.

So, as today's episode launches into Joe Infranco's experiences with some special needs students who are describing engagement with the ethereal, God's word remains our lifeline.
