Ana grew up in Nicaragua, surrounded by her mother’s sewing machines and design patterns. She was deeply moved by the sight of marginalized and abused women searching through garbage cans for anything useful. In her home country, she started using her skills in entrepreneurship and design to develop a social business aimed at providing work for marginalized women to restore their dignity through providing work; while working with them, loving them and sharing Christ's message she saw restoration while her business grew. Political unrest eventually brought her to Canada.

Nowadays, Ana has started a social business in cooperation with her local church, Tenth Church in Vancouver. She involves business people from the church, as well as from outside the church, to support social businesses around the globe (in Cambodia, Mexico, and Africa) that work with marginalized women. They provide support in areas such as leadership, marketing, sales, design, and other business or spiritual-related issues. In the meantime, other churches have also shown interest.

“I measure my decisions by the 400-year rule,” Bill Job shares in this podcast. “I imagine: how will I look back on my decision 400 years from now? This gives me an eternal perspective that stretches me out of my present life.” Bill continues: “People are eternal by nature, so how will my decision affect that person from an eternal point of view? Losing some productivity today in a work context might get another meaning.” Bill illustrates the practical implications of this decision-making approach, particularly in the context of honoring all people and the culture of honor they developed in the company.

To the question of how to guard quality at work, Bill adds, “We had easy-to-reach quality standards to assure accountability. People knew they had to reach those standards to be able to work in the company.”

Sara Robertson runs Dirty Apron, a refined cooking school at a classy location downtown Vancouver. She candidly shares about the learning curves she and her husband went through in integrating business and mission. They had a background in mission (YWAM), but when they embarked on their entrepreneurial journey 17 years ago, they didn’t regard their business ‘as a mission’. “God revealed it to us in the process,” tells Sara and shares what she learned about finances and through a difficult, dark period with their staff. “I used to think that mission meant going to foreign places, but God brings the world here at our doorstep. My mission is right here at our work.”

"In China, I seem to be more spiritually alert, but it is easy to become comfortable in your home country," admits Bill. After 1,5 years of a faulty production process and hardly any sales, he decided to take responsibility for leadership. Even though the factory was losing money, he felt the Lord, the Owner, didn't want him to stop. He shares about his interaction with the Lord in this situation, like spending a few days and nights in the facility, worshiping, seeking, and enjoying the Lord.

This example shows that overcoming challenges isn't about ‘becoming successful’ but can be an opportunity to deepen the relationship with the Lord.

This episode marks the beginning of a series with Bill on the theme 'Thriving Amidst Adversities.' Drawing from past experiences and witnessing God coming through time and again, his faith was strengthened. However, not everything unfolded as expected, such as the production line coming to a halt due to the global economic downturn. Despite rehiring some employees later, over a hundred people lost their jobs during that challenging period. Bill felt guided to organize a grieving ceremony, providing people with an opportunity to mourn and receive comfort from the Lord and one another.

For Bill, overcoming challenges and experiencing breakthroughs isn't about ‘becoming successful’; instead, he views it first and foremost as a journey to deepen his partnership with the Lord.

He shares insights into his journey, recounting how he transitioned from his role as a pastor to enter the business world due to a desire to connect with non-Christians. The Gospel is not just good; it's great," declares Colin Crawley in this engaging discussion about intentional evangelism in a business setting. Colin, owner of Bauhinia Consulting, advises business leaders on advancing the Gospel within their enterprises. When hired by a company, Colin conducts research, provides a diagnostic report on the missional potential of the business, discusses spiritual goals with the leaders and trains for success. Colin acknowledges, "God is the one drawing people to Him, and He is responsible for the output, but we can influence the input." He shares both measured numbers and impactful stories, such as a woman whose life was transformed, affecting those around her. While Gea is questioning, Bill agrees as he recounts how transformed lives in a work context had positively impacted his business, also financially, which had surprised him. Colin emphasizes, "It's good for business profit; the Gospel makes people more human and the workplace more as it was always meant to be.”
