Jesus’ was dedicated to one end in life – He came to die, not live. His death was not just an event that happened; He accomplished it; He steadfastly set His face like a flint to go to His death (Luke 9: 31,51). He laid down His life (John 10:15-18).
Christ’s greatest accomplishment, his ultimate vision, goal and purpose in life was death – the very opposite of what anyone with such divine powers would desire. That which we abhor was his passion. He became everything we don ’t want so that we might have what we need.
He set his face like a flint, like an adamant harder that a flint or stone. This means to be courageous, firm, and resolved to accomplish a certain thing in spite of all the scorn and difficulties.
