Every six months New Zealand celebrates those who have gone above and beyond and they are recognised for their years of dedication within the Honours system. Michael Webster, Secretary of the Cabinet/Clerk of the Executive Council, joins Karyn to discuss who decides who gets these awards and why.

Our last guest is one half of the duo known in Christchurch as the Brilliant Bagshaws Dr Sue Bagshaw has worked in the youth health sector for 30 years. She's set up and been involved in so many organisations benefitting young people it would make your head spin. She chairs the Korowai Youth Well-Being Trust running the Youth One Stop Shop 298 Youth Health, where she runs teaching clinics and is in the process of setting up the Christchurch Youth Hub - Te Hurihanga o Rangatahi, a collaboration of health and social services and transitional housing for youth. Dr Bagshaw established the 198 youth one stop shop in 1995 and helped run it for 15 years. She's advised a network of similar organisations around the country, now known as the Network of Youth One Stop Shops. Following the Christchurch earthquakes, she brought together 16 youth organisations to form the first youth hub in Barbadoes Street in 2012. Colin: Dr Bagshaw is now Dame Susan Bagshaw. Alicia Olatuja is a mezzo-soprano who covers songs by artists as diverse as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. And she's just as much at home singing gospel and opera. You might not know her name yet, but you may have seen her perform. Alicia made her international debut in 2013, stunning a global audience of millions during President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremony with a soaring feature solo during the Battle Hymn of the Republic with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. She released her debut album in February, Intuition: Songs From The Minds Of Women and she performs at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on Wednesday night as part of the Wellington Jazz Festival. The 28th Maori Battalion is well known for its role in the Second World War but it was a story of many parts. The companies of the battalion were drawn from different tribal and regional groups and often served far apart from each other. One of the biggest conflicts for the battalion's B company was the battle of Monte Cassino and those men went on to have a huge impact on Aoteaora in the second half of the 20th century. In April, Sir Wira Gardiner published his history of B company - Ake Ake Kia Kaha E! and then with the last remaining veteran of B Company, Robert Gillies, known as Papa Bom, commenced a hikoi across Italy to all the battle fields the 28 Maori Battalion traversed over a period of 18 months We spoke to him just after the hikoi's end in Trieste where the war ended with Germany's surrender on 7 May 1945. I began by asking how much it meant to have Papa Bom guiding the roopu.

Mark Costello is an Auckland University marine ecologist, who co-leads the world's most comprehensive stocktake of marine life, which has enabled scientists to name all but half a million of all marine species. The stocktake has allowed scientists to learn how marine species behave as the sea temperature rises, and what impact that has on oxygen. Professor Costello is also one of the lead authors of the IPCC's next report on global warming. His chapter concerns oceans and biodiversity. Research by the Maori health researcher, Professor Papaarangi Reid shows there was a nine year gap in life expectancy between Maori and non-Maori - a couple of years ago research showed it had been reduced to seven. Several DHBs across the country either have in place - or are rolling out - training to improve their engagement with Maori in the Emergency Department. The Australasian College of Emergency Medicine is getting in right at the start of ED training with a new policy: Te Rautaki Manaaki Mana: Excellence in Emergency Care for Maori. An emphasis on understanding basic tikanga, language, pronunciation will mean the emergency departments will start to feel like somewhere Maori patients, whanau and staff feel they are the same as everyone else. We spoke to the President of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine - Dr John Bonning - on the line from Waikato and Dr Inia Tomas, co- chair of Countries Manukau Manaaki Mana Excellence in Emergency Care for Maori who was in our Auckland studio I began by asking Dr Tomas about the proportion of patients at Middlemore hospital's ED who are Maori or Pacific Islanders.

My next guest is someone who has always had her tipuna by her side. She comes from the East Coast, near Gisborne. Her life's work led her to head the Maori Women's Welfare League in the 1990's, to the Waitangi Tribunal where she was a member for more than a decade -- she was a Human Rights Commissioner, a marriage guidance counsellor, a mediator, a peacemaker and of course a wife and mother. Whaea Areta Koopu CBE is now Dame Areta Koopu. We began by asking how Sir Apirana Ngata's influence meant her whanau has kept the farm that has been theirs for generations.

She has for decades been known as Sir Peter Jackson's partner in life and on all his films since 'Meet the Feebles' in 1989. Together with fellow screenwriter Philippa Boyens, she has three Oscars for her work on the final episode of 'The Lord of the Rings', and a further 24 award nominations a whopping 30 wins from the Australian Film Institute, the BAFTAs, the Grammys, the Golden Globes, and the Writers Guild of America. Dame Fran Walsh has been the co-screenwriter of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, 'King Kong', 'The Lovely Bones', the three-film adaptation of 'The Hobbit', and most recently 'Mortal Engines'. Add to that, Heavenly Creatures, and the documentary 'West of Memphis'. Dame Fran has eschewed the limelight, carefully guarding her privacy, but we were fortunate to meet her at Park Road Post, in the heart of Wellywood, the suburb of Miramar.
