Judges 13.1-25.

It might seem perverse to include Samson in our series on faith heroes, as his life was a mess and he dishonoured God time and time again. But strangely he appears in Hebrews 11 as an example of faith. So what can we learn from his life?

Judges 7.1-21.

From starting out as a reluctant leader hiding in a winepress, Gideon now heads a battle-ready force of 32,000. But then God announces some drastic defence cuts, slashing the number of Gideon's fighting men to just 300, equipped with ram's horns, candles and jam jars. The story of Gideon explores how God works through our human limitations, builds our faith in moments of fear, and brings breakthrough in the most unexpected ways.

Judges 6.1-16.

The Bible's psalmists sometimes express dismay that they are surrounded by enemies and, as Christians, we too can feel intimidated by voices that are hostile or critical of our beliefs and values. But in Christ we are more than conquerers and if anyone shows us how to prevail in faith when outnumbered it is Gideon.

Joshua 6.1-25.

Joshua's faith is put to the test when God reveals to him what seems to be a bizarre strategy for the first big advance into the Promised Land.

Joshua 3.1-17.

It’s now, at long last, almost time to enter the land. As the sportswear brand slogan famously says, ‘just do it.’ But not quite yet. Before that, God gives Joshua a very important instruction which is highly relevant for us; ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow I will do amazing things among you.’ Are we a consecrated people? And are we up for taking that first step in faith, dependent on God’s promise that, as we do, he will move in power?

Joshua 1.1-11.

After Moses' death, Joshua has to go further than his great predecessor ever did and advance with his people into a well-defended Promised Land. It is time to bring forty years of drifting around in the desert to an end. There's a land flowing with milk and honey to take possession of. This is a new season with a new challenge and a new command from God.

Exodus 12.31-39 and 14.5-22.

After Moses has confronted hard-hearted Pharaoh again and again, telling him to let God's people go, it's finally time to leave Egypt. But the test of faith is not over; the imposing natural obstacle of the Red Sea is just up ahead and Pharaoh's army is fast approaching from behind. And two million people are grumbling about you. How do you lead with faith when under pressure like that?

Exodus 4.1-17.

Moses outlines to God five reasons why he is such a poor candidate to lead his people out of slavery into the Promised Land. Exodus 4 outlines the last three. Moses feels insecure (but what if..?) He feels inarticulate (but Lord, I am slow of speech). And he feels inadequate (yes, but please send someone else). But if God calls, God equips.

Exodus 3.1-15.

Moses' encounter with the mysterious and holy presence of God at the burning bush shows how God sovereignly takes the initiative but is prepared to wait patiently until someone is ready at last to be a leader.
