As we near the end of Nehemiah's story, we see the people have a renewed resolve to the live faithfully for glory of God. In chapter 10, they make a few resolutions as a covenant people.

The walls are built. The gates are up. The people have gathered to worship together for the first time in over a century, and their highest priority is to open up the scriptures.

Opposition to God's doesn't just come from the outside; sometimes, it comes from within. Disunity began to plague God's people. It was so destructive to their identity that Nehemiah put the mission on hold until their issues were resolved. Opposition comes against Nehemiah and God's people as they attempt to accomplish the will of God. Missional opposition is an important theme in scripture, and it happens when anything or anyone hinders your perseverance in following Jesus and accomplishing his work. Yet, even in the face of such opposition, God is always faithful to defend his people and accomplish his work through them.

God has given Nehemiah favor with the king, he's released to do the work, but now he has to actually get the work done. This requires spiritual leadership: assessing what's broken, inspiring God's people, and mobilizing them for mission.

When we talk about God’s sovereignty we're referring to the fact that God is subject to no one and influenced by no one. He is absolutely independent and impassible; ultimate in both ability and authority. This attribute of God ripples all throughout the story of Nehemiah, throughout redemptive history, and even today.

How does an ordinary man like Nehemiah accomplish an extraordinary work like rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem? Similarly, how does an ordinary group of people like us accomplish an extraordinary work like planting a new church community? Nehemiah responds to his God-given burden by dropping to his knees in prayer.

For hundreds of years, God's people had been in exile, scattered without a home. God called Nehemiah out of that exile and back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city of God's people.

The story of Nehemiah is all about how God’s hand is over the mission of his people. He calls, he provides resources, he produces fruit. Nehemiah is about both what faithful worship looks like and what faithful mission looks like. How should we respond to brokenness in our community, our church, our homes, and our lives?
